Just wondering if anyone has ever done this race - Yashima Cup Mount Chokai Bycicle Classic in Akita (矢島カップMt.鳥海バイシクルクラシック).
It is a 2 day event at the end of July. The first day is TT and the second HC. The hill climb is 26km long, but I think it is possible to choose between Champions course and Beginners course, 26km and 13km respectively.
The fee for just one (any) day is Y6000 or Y7500 for 2 days. The registration deadline is May 31.

Has anyone ever done it, knows anything about it or would like to do it this year?

here's the website - http://www.city.yurihonjo.akita.jp/yashima/roadrace/cycle hp/top/newindex.html

Cheers,

This is a wonderful event. One of the best out there.

Saturday is a TT. 8km on a rolling course. Some take it quite seriously and will be there in full TT kit and bike set up.

Sunday is a HC. Long and not too steep.

Times are combined for the overall result.

The only problem is the distance from Tokyo. If you have time to spare, you can make a really good weekend of it. In the village there is an onsen and a large grass area where you can camp for free. There is entertainment and fireworks at night, making a real party atmosphere.

If you have time to explore the Chokai skyline (blue line?) which is not used for the race is a a beautiful climb and has great views of the Japan Sea.

The coastline all the way up from Niigata is spectacular too.

Also, I have friends in Sakata who do cycling touring and acommodation if you have time to spare:

Unfortunately I can't go this year and haven't been in the last few years as it clashes with visits home and / or Fuji Rock.

Here's Andrew's race report from last year:

Anyway, definitely recommended.

Thank you for the reply.
I have already signed up for it. It is during my vacation time, so there is no issue with time limit. It sounds like fun and since we are planning a road trip along the coast from Niigata to Hokkaido, it will be a good excuse to stop there for the weekend.

And thanks for the info regarding your friends in Sakata. We'll try to make a stop there and try to get a loaf of bread that they posted on their blog.

No worries. If you need any advice about the route up the coast, just let me know.

The guys in Sakata are just starting up a cycling touring thing. If you need somewhere to stay I'm sure they'll help you and probably for free.

Enjoy the event!
