So I have a couple of weeks off from the 8th till the 22nd of August and I don't know what to do. My wife has work, my eldest is abroad and I'm off and thinking about going somewhere myself.

I am planning to drive somewhere and cycle around for a week or so. I don't want to change hotel every day and I don't want to be bored. I'd like to go somewhere, stay a night or three, cycle around and have a beer or two at night. Then possibly change location and do the same again.

Noto peninsula is relatively close and looks like good cycling but is there stuff to do? If my trip coincides with any summer festivals that would be great. I'm in Naoetsu and we have a pretty good festival. Something similar would be ideal. My biggest fear is spending the day cycling then eating a bento and going to sleep at seven o'clock.

I guess north or Niigata is also an option as is Nagano.

Any thoughts?

Nikko as your base can keep you busy for at least 3 or 4 days. If you like climbing and onsens :p
Sumida (or Sumika?) Hostel is super nice, near the station and let me keep my bike inside at night.

19th to 21st August.

The ferry from Naoetsu takes you to Ogi where the event is held. A short ride to the othe side of the penninsula takes you to the campsite at Sobama

Camping is cheap. A lot of people camp on the beach itself which is free. The coastline up from here is beautiful all the way. There are some other camping options further up the coast if you want to get away from the festivities. Good snorkelling too.

I'd recommend a couple of days of cycling, followed by a couple of days of boozing at the festival!

I may try and get over this year too.
