I finally took the time to write up the story about my back ailment that is preventing me from touching my bikes. It ended up a little long, but this way it will also help me for future reference.

http://positivo-espresso.blogspot.com/2012/01/what-pain.html

I've been overwhelmed by all the messages of sympathy many of you have sent. I sincerely hope you all will remain healthy and able to continue cycling for good.

I hope you can make a complete recovery.I read your blog and I really feel for you.Good luck.

Ludwig,

Thanks for sharing. I can only imagine the physical and mental pain you have, and probably still experiencing.
Although unfortunately there is nothing I can help in easing the pain, I truly wish for your fast recovery, and still hope we will be able to ride together again sometime in the future!

Ludwig,

Thank you for sharing, I can sympathize with the pain caused by having a needle pushed in to your spine as I had the lumbar injection to paralyze my legs while undergoing knee surgery. To have multiple injections – Terrifying!
Please don't let the dooms doctors get you down – the body is an amazing machine and with some time and relaxation I'm sure you'll be back on the bike, remember it took me 4 years to get back. But stressing out about it is not good for your mental health and also your recovery.

All the best Ludwig.

Reading your blog, I could really feel your pain and frustration. My one incident with a herniated disc was not a nice thing, having pain shoot down my leg from my back scared the bejeezus outta me. Like all the others here and I'm sure everywhere you are known I can only wish the best for a speedy recovery and echoing James would encourage you to look on the glass half full side of things. Time and rest are great healers but their power is infinitely greater when coupled with positivo attitudium. Cheers for a great new year :)

Ludwig, Sorry the cauterization procedure did not provide complete solution (that must be really new). Your write up and images reminded me of the time the docs opened up my neck to give me a discectomy and bone graft between C3 and C4.

My neuro and ortho surgeons were telling me that "nice" endurance athletes often have 1/2 the recovery time because of positive mental attitude, ability to endure pain, goal orientation, and solid physical health. Pls keep spirits up and hope you have speedy recovery!

Ludwig, I'm really sorry to hear about all of this, quite the detailed write up, scary as can be I imagine!

Like others have said, stay positive, and take it easy, I'm sure your body will fight back and heal itself, it is an amazing machine!

Cheers!

That was a very interesting read Ludwig and has really put what you've been going through in perspective. I agree with James, stay positive and even though it must be incredibly frustrating , try to give it time. Enjoy hiking, swimming and walking if you can....and of course spending more time with your wife!

Jeez-louise!! It'll take a while to digest all that, but good/fortune with any treatment in the meantime.

Ludwig,

Jeez, I am so sorry to hear about the trials you are going through with your back pain. I didn't realise it was so serious until I read through your detailed and very informative write-up. The medical procedures you endured made me grimace more than once, but I am glad that you have an uncle who specialises in lower back pain on hand to advice you going forward - that has to be at least some sliver of a silver lining. One question: in between your epic rides on the weekend did you do any cycling (or other exercise) during the week ? I know in my case I generally don't get the chance, so every weekend ride is a "shock" to the body, making recovery so much harder - I often think this can't be good for me, and I wonder if this might be a contributing factor in some way.
Anyway, I wish you a fast recovery, and I'm sure through your hiking you're already compiling a list of insane trails to try again once you're back on your bike. And I know that when that happens, none of us will still be anywhere near covering all the roads and rindo you've managed to travel in the last three years...

Take care and keep positive !
Steve
