In April 2012 I took up a job as a researcher at RIKEN in Wako, Saitama. Even before arriving I made sure that cycling would be continued. After a few weeks I was able to join @Yamabushi's rides, which was a fantastic introduction into the beautiful rindos of Saitama and beyond. Around the same time @theBlob, @kawa and @Mlac Peek started shredding the course at Saiko and I joined several times.

Also around the same time @Chikako moved back to Tokyo from Chiba, where she had been introduced to road cycling with her colleagues through Team Kameda Medicycle. Some day while riding on the Arakawa she met @Yamabushi who invited her to join TCC.

@Chikako and I met for the first time on the unsuccessful try for Nichitsu. We've been joining the weekly rides to Hanno, Ome, Chichibu, Ogawamachi and other destinations ever since. Love grew, and we moved in together late 2013.

We got married on April 3rd! And of course, given the nature and history of our relationship, there will be a cycling event to celebrate. At first I had a great ride with 5 climbs and 150km mapped out, but since we want it to be inviting for a variety of riders, the plan is as follows.

Group A led by @Aron B will ride out from the Spaceship on the Arakawa to Ogose, ride through the golf courses and cross over to Tokigawa. The "Wedding Cup" will be a race up Shiraishi-toge. We will group at the bottom and start off at the same time. Since my peak of the season was the first week of April and I have obviously won already, the Cup should be open to challengers. After that we descend Sadamine-toge to Gelateria Hana. The pace will be moderate, except for Shiraishi. All climbs are WATT (wait at the top).

Group B led by @Chikako will ride out from Ogawamachi station along route 11 and up and over Sadamine-toge, straight to Gelateria Hana. The pace will be very easy, as she is riding for two, literally.

The two groups meet at Hana at 2pm, where pizza and cinnamon rolls will be served for all. The Wedding Cup will be awarded, and we will have a jolly good time. After that we return to Ogawamachi station via Sadamine-toge.

Group A
Meet Time: 9:30am
Meet Place: at the Spaceship (HERE)
Climbing: ~1000m
Distance: ~115km
Route: HERE

Group B
Meet Time: 11:30am (there's a convenient train arriving at 11.21am, leaving Ikebukuro at 10.10am)
Meet Place: Ogawamachi station
Climbing: ~700m
Distance: ~55km
Route: HERE

Anybody is welcome. We are hoping as many TCC'ers as possible will join! We need to know beforehand how many people will come to arrange with the restaurant. If you are joining, please let us know in this thread, via PM, or via email at [email protected].

These plans are subject to change. In particular the restaurant does not have limitless capacity, so if there's a large turnout, which we hope for, we'll arrange for something else. In the case of rain, we will likely postpone.

Too long, didn't read: sign up below for fun & pizza.

Congratulations to you both! I'm sure it will be a wonderful day and a wonderful life!

The ride sounds like a great idea. Maybe if enough are coming we can book the place and ensure there are enough cinnamon rolls to keep @leicaman from getting upset.

I have seen many pics of Aron and Chikako on early TCC.

Congrats on cementing the getting together.

Congratulations, @Aron B and @Chikako!
Unfortunately am not around to join you for the May 10 ride so another time for the pizza (or preferably that wild boar udon, nearby)

Wishing you all the best together.

Thank you all for the congratulations.
So we had wonderful days of celebration last weekend, very personal and festive with family and close friends.
This weekend we've both came with a cold and are staying inside despite the beautiful weather taking turns blowing our noses with 鼻セレブ。

I have been away from serious cycling for months, so my challenge for this day (May 10th) would be to reach the Hana pizza taking the easiest route.
Volunteers who would be accompanying me would be very much appreciated.
Our favorite pizza place will open up the terrace space for us and we'd like to treat everybody with their pizza, cakes, gelato, and of course the cinnamon buns.

The route to be updated soon!

Just a notice that the routes will be posted soon. We are aiming at having the two groups converge at Gelateria Hana around 2pm. I'm looking at about 100km and three climbs for the fast group from the spaceship up to there, with the Wedding Cup to be decided on Yamabushi toge. If people have any (other) suggestions, now is the time to let me know.

Routes are now posted. We hope many people will join! Please sign up below if you're joining.

So today I tested my climbing & descending in the most gentle pace up the Sadamine toge from Ogawamachi side, escorted by Aron and @Yamabushi.
It went much better than I had expected, and I was extremely happy to be in the Chichibu greenery under a beautiful sky.
We hope many TCCers would be able to make it on the day, and for people who want to ride in Chichibu with minimum cycling, this may be a perfect occasion to join group B.

As I am 7 months pregnant, I've only been riding my commuting bike and engaged in walking, swimming, yoga, and maternity exercises.
However, cycling under certain caution would probably benefit expecting mothers.
Few citations from the website of ACOG (The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists).
  • Cycling provides a good aerobic workout.:)
  • Avoid brisk exercise in hot, humid weather or when you have a fever.→Will try to stay in the shades and stick to a moderate pace.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that will help you to remain cool.→Will be borrowing Aron's jersey.
  • Drink plenty of water to help keep you from overheating and dehydrating.→Maybe two bottles even for 55km.
  • Make sure you consume the daily extra calories you need during pregnancy.→This will be fulfilled at Gelateria Hana!

I will come, I may train out there and ride from ogawamachi with chikako. Will confirm later I guess.

Unless something major happens I'll be joining Group A. Looking forward to it!

And if anyone wants to be pulled up to the Spaceship from central Tokyo (Korakuen area) along the Arakawa, let me know. ;)
