not sure if hardware store carries

Hi there
I advise buying the Iwatani ones that use "cassette gas", the aerosol shaped cans used in those nabe hobs. It is much cheaper for the fuel and much easier to find in convenience stores etc.
The fat round canisters contain better fuel, but that only matters if you are winter camping in sub zero temps. The canisters are about three times the price of gas cassettes and you have to go to a sports or hardware store to find them.

An example cassette gas burner is called

イワタニ ジュニアコンパクトバーナー CB-JCB

It folds up into a little box for carrying.
