Ride VeloViewer tiling in Japan

Bring up an activities map with the region you want to explore, then do an Unexplored Tile Export from the map settings dialog. Happy hunting!

Y'all seem to have a good thing going with Tiling, and sorry if this has been posted before, but have y'all ever used https://wandrer.earth/ ? I use mine in conjunction with Strava. There are game aspects to it which I sometimes look at, but I mostly like the "new roads" tracking and % of areas

Took a quick look. Good point...it would suit my OCD nature very well. Bad point...it would cause me to go down another OCD rabbit hole.

Looks like there is a free version and then a $30 yearly version that would show all the rides you've ever done on Strava. Have you done the paid version?

I did the paid version to get all my past rides imported. The renewal is coming up soon and I need to reevaluate if I still need the $30 version. Honestly though $30 for a year is right around the point where I don't mind paying just to support the creator.

I don't actually look at Wandrer's website a lot, but I like when it adds into my ride descriptions how much new road I saw. And sometimes it is just enough motivation to deviate from my standard route home and ride through an adjacent neighborhood knowing I'll get some new mileage. I'm sitting at 6% of Ishikawa completed which puts me on top of the leaderboard for the prefecture (there are only 38 of us). This is all of Japan: https://wandrer.earth/a/japan?page=1 Sorry, it makes you sign in to see it :(

When I play video games I can be a bit of compleitionist and I do enjoy some "gameification"... but thankfully I haven't spiraled too far with this.

I had the free version and it would automagically edit my Strava ride descriptions with its statistics. Seems to have stopped at some point and to be honest I didn't really miss it.

Was off to do some tiling yesterday. Was surprised to find that many of the little roads I'd chosen to ride were under water. Apparently, several drivers were also surprised, judging by the number of cars abandoned in the water. But with a tile on the line, what is a little water? At one crossing that looked particularly deep, with water flowing across, I sized up the chance of success (not doing it meant a 6km detour), and went for it. At the deepest point, the water was up well above the chainrings. Forward progress was slow and the deep part longer than expected, but I managed not to stop and came out on the other side (Ride Across the River, Deep and Wide...Dire Straits...came to mind) wet but successful. Now, I have to dry out the bike and lube everything up again. My 4iiii power meter bit the dust though (hoping it just needs a new battery). All anticipated tiles properly achieved. Mission accomplished.

Nice ride yesterday. Despite being in the middle of rainy season, the clouds parted on a weekend so I was able to get up to Tochigi for a bit of a ramble. Tiling continues apace.

Despite being in the middle of rainy season,
Somebody said it recently: The only thing worse than the beginning of the rainy season is the end of the rainy season!

Seems like the last couple years, the rainy season began early, then stopped and started, then lingered past the normal faucet-shut-off-date of mid July. But, yeah, what follows the rainy season (whenever that comes) is The Oven. Still, I much prefer the heat to the cold.

Off on a tiling mission this weekend. After carefully studying where HFM has gone, I 'borrowed' some of his route. I was on the lookout for his long lost mascot, but it must still be living freely in the wild. No luck finding it.

I made the mistake of stopping to take a video of a troop of monkeys and inadvertently got between some of the younguns and dad (or mom). It made a show of coming at me, but as soon as I realized the situation, I took off.

Had my first flat ever on Gatorskins. I've given them some rough treatment on trails and such, so I deserved it, but surprised all the same.

Saw deer and snakes, a waterfall, and had the pleasure of pulling leeches out of my shoes after a hike along/in a stream (something HFM had mentioned happened to him). Not a fan of leeches.

Unfortunately, looks like I missed a couple of tiles. Maybe the GPS gods will smile on me and give me the tile (I swear I was over the line) someday. If not, back I go....someday. Bagged a fair number of tiles, but two got away.

The tiling bug continues to motivate me to wake up early, throw the bike in a bag, ride the train for a couple hours, ride, get sweaty, then inflict myself on unsuspecting passengers on the train home. It was a good day on the bike though. One of the nicer routes I've done lately, and mostly flat. No increase in my max square though. : ( (But there's always tomorrow.)

Slogged through suburbia yesterday on another tiling mission. About 100km and 617 meters climbing. With the heat, I was beat when I got back. So I look on Strava and discover that Andrei O. managed to do 2 days of climbing with over 5000 meters each day and something like 180 km distance each. I feel like such a wimp now. 😢

Spent my last weekend before work picks up, playing around up around Kiryu. Day 1 was an easy day, with a few short climbs near Kiryu. As usual, had to get some tiles. At one point, they were doing the dreaded construction, just at the start of a hiking trail I needed. Only 10 feet of 'construction' (just tracks where the heavy equipment had been) blocked the route. I got the, "Dame" from the guardmen, but after a bit of pleading and explanation that I only needed to go up the path 5 minutes or so and I'd be right back, even showed them my track on MapsMe. Amazingly, they let me pass. As I came back down, I thanked them profusely and rewarded the vigilant but 'flexible' guardmen with a small pack of Haribo each.

Day 2, I headed up the mountain on the Watarase train. Picked up some tiles at the top then got more on the way back down. I had big plans for collecting many more, but each little hiking detour off the road cost me time so that eventually, I'd have to leave the tiles for another day. Caught the special train back down to Kiryu. This train had no windows and had wooden benches and tables. Pretty fun. (The conductor explained that the station made of wood is over 100 years old.)

Day 3 sucked. Just riding through urban sprawl with no biking infrastructure. Fast traffic, no shoulder. Well, at least that's done. Bumped up my Max Square to 44x44.

Day 2 route is here for anyone interested.
