UK Olympic Bikes 2012

FUGLY! - You can keep your marginal gains!

The Bike Pimp has spoken - End of topic :D

I think the bicycle is a wonderful invention where engineering, ergonomics and art is fused together.

I know owners of vintage cars who are more attached to thier bicycles than they are the cars and I suppose it has something to do with the suffering we endure on them - a bit like a mothers love for her child due to the pains and labours of child birth.

Yes I did just say that :D

The first comment on that link says it all! FUGLY!

I think the bike is a good match for the riders appearance, I mean Wiggins is no James Bond. End of the day if they win gold then no one will care and the bikes will be auctioned off for thousands. I wonder weather the weight of being favorites will trip them up?

I am watching the Olymic road race now, and can't stop thinking how nice it would be if they were all riding the same bike. Sure, let them choose the size, but when they play volleyball, they do not get to bring their own ball and net, right? Why let them ride different bikes. OK, I know. It comes down to money, but especially in the Olympics... it should be a level playing ground. At the end of the day, the braging rights are about the person, not the equipment.

Someone tell me I am crazy.

OK, you're crazy! No one was winning because their bike was significantly superior to anyone else's. It's all about the engine and more importantly the team tactics and strategy!

Have to agree - There really is very little difference in bikes at this level and it all comes down to the rider - and not always the strongest.

Perish the thought, huh? Couldn't agree with you more. Everyone should be on nearly identical equipment (barring size) similar to what is done with Japanese Keirin. As they have it now - too much of the event is based on the performance of the equipment and not the athlete. But this goes for nearly every event except for perhaps some of the track and field and football or volleyball.

Yeah and look how stagnant the Japanese Keirin Association is!

The other issue with the one bike all rider is that not everyone suits a certain style of frame.

Just look at the racing and tell me if the frames or wheels have played a major role in the teams or riders winning?

The Answer is no - Vino won the gold because he is a fox that knows how to read the race; Sky won the TdF because they shut down the race after 4 impressive stages. Vockler won the KOM because he is a madman and talks to himself and thus riders avoid him incase he suddenly goes crazy...well he also has been riding those mountains since he was 10 years old and can descend like a drunk on a flight of stairs and Cavendish has won 4 years in a row on the Champs Elysees on four different bikes because he's just so damn fast!

The bikes raced are basically as good as they are going to get in regards to marginal gains - at the end of the day it's all about the engine and the fitting to the machine.

So yeah put all the riders on the same bike and I can 100% guarantee the results will be identical. Not only that but it will take away another point of interest in bike racing and that's the bike porn!

F-1, Nascar, Tour De France, bring your own wheels - your own ride, but for the Olymipcs, well, I didn't notice much bike porn in that race, and it just seemed a bit off.

If I want to compete as a judo player and have an ichigo ole theme on my judoji because I like the look, the taste, or feel it suits me better, I can't do it. I suppose runners can where whatever shoes they want. I was just wondering where and how they draw the lines for the Olympics I guess.

Basically anything is allowed as long as it follows the UCI guidelines - In fact most of the sports regulations and rules are set by the governing body and not the IOC.

But there is a whole list of regulations that the bikes, wheels, components and clothing must adhere too in order to pass.

I'm just saying - imagine for a moment - that the Olympics was truly an international event whereby it pitted contestants not based on their eco-industrial ability. Of course this is absurd, because we all know that it DOES take HUGE eco-industrial resources to facilitate advanced technology -- BUT -- take 2 or 3 steps back.. or even about 10steps - cause I'd personally like to see a scratch race where they all have to do a Box HIll descent ITT on Big Wheels.

So, the team kit, to anyone with any sense of style, worked really well.

Strong lines, decent colours, powerful overall image, etc.

Love it, and love McCartney.

Bollox mate!

Wiggo's rendition of the kit is much better - have it mate

The Olympic uniform of the UK team for the ceremony looked really skanky, straight from a shopping centre in Chelmsford or Dagenham. Did McCartney also design that?

On the bike, in itself I don't see what's so wrong with it. It is like these black carbon things that people are riding nowadays. The stem is really interesting; also the top tube and the drop off from the headset. They have paid so much attention to aerodynamics but the front brake calipers are still exposed. I thought the trend nowadays was for them to be embedded within the forks. The cabling also looks quite messy.

In 5 years time I guess most TCCers will be on similar looking bikes.

Why wait 5yrs? One of my factory suppliers have had a clone of this for more than 6mo now. And far far far less than the 'who knows how much' UK Cycling Paid.

They're so fugly I'm going to make a few in proper PLA colors complete with Red Star head badge, chainstay slogans and ordinance mounts.

Agreed the uniform looked pretty 'ugh' - but the US uniform also just about made me puke. Reminded me of Guardian Angels meets Sailor Moon.
