I didn't get out as much as I wanted in September. Lots of people will have had the same frustration, with all the crappy weather. Still, I recorded 1016 km, of which around 400 km was commuting and the rest fun in the sun (and rain).

Better luck in October

Here here! although it's starting with the same crap as September....

On the trainer today for the first time since my crash. Getting some movement back as the pain gradually subsides. Seems like most of the pain is being caused by the muscles around my shoulder, back and ribs that strained on impact. As the movement comes back though, the weird feeling of a dislocated collar bone sticking out my shoulder becomes more and more noticeable. Plus it also looks kind of weird. Going next week to see what the specialist shoulder surgeon in Funabashi says. Will I ever play concern violin again?

Edit: Not literally sticking out my shoulder, there is still a layer of skin on it.

September started out well, found a window of opportunity in early September and did Izu peninsula. After that, not much at all. Shifted to jogging a bit since rain threatened almost every day. Hoping October has more sunny days. Starting to lose my hard won summer fitness (and weight loss). Looks like tomorrow will be a good chance to get out. Planning to do my 'big square' route... Machida, Enoshima, rt 62 to Hadano>Yabitsu(from the south)>Miyagase, then back toward Machida. 82 miler. Just hope the weather holds.

After being slowed down by a cold last week I put in a big week of 670 km this week.

Lots of miles in the dark. Lots in the wet too.

That's October for you.

I got a few nice rides in the local hills like this too:

Two more races to aim at:

Gunma CSC in two weeks time and Motegi at the beginning of November.

Bring them on!

My longest ride for a long time today: from home, up the Tamagawa, on to Oume, then north to tackle Shiraishi followed by Shomaru, a late lunch at Turnip, a fun descent into Hanno, and riding into darkness all the way home again. 187 km round-trip. Great fun, with hundreds of riders out at Shiraishi taking advantage of the wonderful weather.

Please don't laugh at my half-fast Shiraishi time (exactly half that of the leader). I know I'm slow... but I'm not the slowest.

Hello all. After a long break I have decided to come back & pester you all with stupid questions again. I was over last sept>oct but had to make late decision to leave the bike as it started sounding like the forks were about to break. It turned out to be crap in the headset and I fixed it very quickly when I got home. Anyhoo I have a trip to Kyushu & Hiroshima next spring and am planning rides in that area. Strava segments do make it much easier to see the popular routes.

Wouldn't this make you twice as fast as the leader? ;)

If you had met up with us on Sunday... you would have been a part of this....
Seriously enticing stuff right there. I might give this moun-tain bi-king? thing a try sometime soon! :)

Anyway, I was not totally impressed by my CatEye Volt400 front light, esp. the battery run time in the brightest mode, but also its performance in the really dark conditions, where I often wished I had more lumens. So last week I got... the Volt1600, because the difference between it and 800 was just 2-3 thousand yen. I am pretty impressed so far and mostly use it on the medium mode (500 lum) for the longer battery life, with occasional blast to the brightest mode to get people's attention (very easy to switch to the strongest mode from any other, by double click). Speaking of getting people's attention:

Switch to the strongest mode, and he sees the light. Did I ever get his attention (and right of way)

The only downsides so far are the brick-like weight (I'm only gonna use it for commuting and touring, so no biggie) and that under this weight the bumps on the road make it go nose-up on the handlebar sometimes (pretty rare). The latter can probably be addressed by tightening the attaching part, or putting it upside down hanging from the handlebar, rather than sitting on top of it. Anyway, pretty pleased with the gadget and (unrelated to it) ready to do at least twice my Sep distance this month to make up for all the rain etc! Keep the rubber side down fellas (unless she's on top of course)

Just had another close call on my way home from work. The construction crane driver almost killed me. If I didn't slam the brakes hard his rear end would be slamming me against the construction work on the left, he was this close:

^ Oh dude, that is way too close. Too many heavy vehicle drivers play Russian Roulette in this country. I've seen it on many occasions thusfar. Not good.

Pass him and flip his side mirror. They can be tilted all the way to the front easily, but cannot be readjusted from the inside. He will have to stop and get out costing him his oh so valuable time. Depending on how far you want to take it, you can confront the rotten b directly then.

Yeah, I usually take some action. I've given him "the stare" and searched like crazy for a copper or a koban to stop him (I was thinking of pulling up in front of him and wave to the cops to come over). I know no meaningful action would have been taken against him, but at least to make him more aware of the possible consequences of his driving FFS... Anyway, not a single copper when you need them, and 3 traffic lights later he makes a right turn, getting away scot-free forever.

So I'm watching the tv and they're talking about the possibility of turning saiko in toda into an Olympic rowing location. At first I'm like yeah! Then I thought about what it would mean for my morning cycling and im like NO! Absolutely I do not approve....

In other news I spied those new shimano shoes over the weekend. Not as nice as the Sidis but very light...

If these are video stills and you can identify the company and license plate, you could send a message to the company telling them about the dangerous pass and point them to the video uploaded to youtube as evidence. It's what I did once and the company the driver works for replied saying they would have words with the driver.
