OK, at Malte's urging, and with the goal of fostering a more objective opinion, I've created a STRAVA account and have just finished uploading all me rides for 2012. So far I can't say that I particularly like the interface, but I'll set those issues aside for a while. As STRAVA is so competition focused, surely I'm just missing it, but where do I go to see a list of all my results on established segments? I can't seem to find it.

Congratulations.

Once you selected a segment you see the "Leaderboard // Overall".
On the Left side you can filter the Leaderboard e.g. for Age Groups. There is also a filter saying "My Results", you will get a history of all your results.

What's your user ID?

Yeah, I understand the leaderboard and how to read it once I'm looking at a particular segment. That's not what I'm talking about. I want to see a list of all the segments that I'm listed on. I can see "Recent Achievements", but I want to see all of my achievements. How do I do that?

As for my ID? I'm just using my name. Here is a link to my page: http://app.strava.com/athletes/993018

Welcome!

I haven't seen a feature that display your achievements in a list but there is a feature in 'Training' tab (left of Dashboard) to display your personal records in a Calendar format. You can click on the 'Personal Records' on the left side of the row that includes the distance graph. Not the best but this is the closest summary of achievements I have seen so far.

You can see all your KOMS here (second places are not achievements right ;))
It's on your profile on the right side under all the statistics .

I want to see all the segments that I'm listed on whether I am KOM or whether I am 135th. It'd be nice to have that info in one list. It looks like that's not available though?

given strava's competitive nature the fancy list tools are only for winners. strava doesn't care if you came in 135th, and frankly doesn't want to remember. if you want to see you name in strava lights you need to get out there and start WINNING!!

(sorry guys, I'm not a strava fan.)

Pete, welcome to Strava. I share your view, while it has the most polished ui, it is not a social place to explore rides and make connections. Strava is for your inner athlete, a motivational tool at best, that trains you to only consider the first place. Some of us are deeply in its grasp, I'm thinking about becoming invisible to get out of this thread mill.

This is the crux of what generally turns me off about STRAVA. While I'll admit a mild interest, frankly, I'm just not that concerned about what everyone else is doing. What I do want to do is track my own progress. STRAVA just doesn't seem to be the right tool for that.

Thank you, Gunnar. I'm trying to see what others like about the UI, but at this point I have to say that I really dislike it. It either doesn't allow me to access the data I want easily, or it doesn't allow me to access it whatsoever. On top of that, the site generally doesn't want to render properly unless I drop my proverbial internet security panties and take it in the keyster. I'm going to endeavor to give it a chance, but thus far, I'm just not seeing the benefit.

One other thing, what's with the whacky segment names like "5 8 1 Climb", and segments that don't particularly make sense. It's completely unintuitive and is just a bunch of clutter.

I am on there (got your invite Pete, cheers!), but don't really use it for all the reasons listed here.

Good for finding new places to ride though...

I think Strava sucks in so many ways.

1) It sucks you into vicarious competition without any social relevance.
2) Its interface sucks as you can't export segments and then ride them later.
3) It sucks by giving you annoying emails about how you suck.
4) It sucks in not being able to organize your ride buddies into relevant groups.
5) It sucks in not letting you create your own challenges, then invite other riders exclusively to them.

But there is a measure of glory in garnering a few KOMs ad decent performances on the segments. And that does encourage riders to try harder. However - on the negative point 0 how can you ride ANY road without thinking about a possible KOM or if someone has just crushed yours??

I know on many rides I do, I am reticent to just chillax and talk with my riding friends as it might affect my Strava score - and when it does, then I have to endure the stupid emails. Also, some rides I prefer to just do without any segment scoring. So, why can't I upload my ride and do that?

Anyway 0 besides all the flaws - the concept is pretty cool, but the developers should start listening to the riders. And, oh yeah, what's the biz model? Premium services never work for long. Not even in porn. And Strava hardly meets the grade as even reasonable bike porn.

...it is not a social place to explore rides and make connections.

Really? I thought quite the opposite. I learned about so many new routes only by looking at the segment explorer or following other riders. I got to know a set of Japanese riders (beyond TCC) just by checking their routes, following them on twitter and meeting them in real life (e.g. for doing tomodachi races - similar to TCC KOM challenge, but without TCC riders).

Strava is for your inner athlete, a motivational tool at best, that trains you to only consider the first place. Some of us are deeply in its grasp, I'm thinking about becoming invisible to get out of this thread mill.

Hmm, there are riders now joining that are very strong and impossible to beat (at least for me). I think there is a lot of fun to be have beyond the first place. However if you prefer to life with the illusion that you are the fastest then better not use it.

If that was so, then why do I like it? How many KOMs do *I* have?

Strava notifies you of personal records (PR). Every time I do better on a segment than I did before, I am told when I upload the ride. It even tells me if a time for a segment is my 2nd or 3rd best personal time (regardless of others' time).

There are a couple of favourite segments that I'm working on where I want to improve my speed / ranking, though I know a KOM is and will always be way out of my reach. Strava is a decent tool for that. There's more to Strava than tracking KOMs.

Sure, there is a lot of room for improvement. On the monthly calendar view, I'd like to see km (and/or time, climbing) numbers for rides and weekly totals. Both RWGPS and MMR do this better. But the basics are covered well.

For 1) This is more a personal problem about setting priorities, right?
For 2) What do you want to do with exported "segments", these are usually only 200m-10km long? Or do you mean to export complete rides from other riders, then you find a tool here.
For 3) Go to "Profile->Email Notofications" and simply turn it off.
For 4) You can create Clubs, like this one.
For 5) You could possible create your own tool on top of STRAVA, there is an open API, some guys already create nice tools, e.g.:
- Segement Notification Service
- Multiple Ride Mapping Tool
- More Segment Details
So Tim, why not build a small App that let you select a set of segments (Wada, Yabitsu, ...) and only list e.g. TCC riders, this could even replace/enhance the TCC all of Fame So don't moan, build something ,your the web expert right?

This is the crux of what generally turns me off about STRAVA. While I'll admit a mild interest, frankly, I'm just not that concerned about what everyone else is doing.

Then don't connect with ride buddies and turn of notifications, but wait you might need to leave facebook too.

What I do want to do is track my own progress. STRAVA just doesn't seem to be the right tool for that.

But that's so much possible, what are you looking for exactly?

C'mon ... UI arguments ... that's a discussion for facebook geeks. It's good enough to do it's purpose. If you want all the data in all possible combination than use their Data API and play around with Excel.

One other thing, what's with the whacky segment names like "5 8 1 Climb", and segments that don't particularly make sense. It's completely unintuitive and is just a bunch of clutter.

This is the automatic segment creation algorithm that seem to be taking the google street name into account. Key segments already have user created, nicer names (like Mikuni,...). You can create better names or filter out segments that you don't like from your ride summary (and they will be hidden from then on).

These were my initial impressions and I stand by them. That being said, I've resigned myself to give it a proper shakeout for at least a few weeks. We'll see if STRAVA can win me over in that time.

I am still in beginners come back overweight mode but I signed up with Strava yesterday and had a peak around.

Just across the bridge from me is a small 3.5km sprint that has over 130 records. The guy who is number 1 is a friend of mine and I don't know any of the others. Seeing as it's only a 1km away start... I'm going to try and do this as often as possible starting out as slow as possible and gradually working up some strength in the legs (with more longer rides of course) and see how long it takes me to get to at least 2nd place.

He's averaged 38.5kph which is pretty fast on this section. Wondering is he has been doing this alone or in a bunch???

We used to use this course for the start of a 12km sprint on Sunday mornings. So I know it's hard to hold over 40kph here without help...

Anyway..it's too close to home not to try and make some dents in the other peoples scores...and get me used to this STRAVA whodingymajig.

:D

Me too!

My Garmin arrived last week, and had my first ride with it on Saturday with Pete (Yamabushi) & crew.
Posted to STRAVA today, and saw a lot of familiar TCC names.
Looking forward to making a few marks of my own

Erm so you aren't racing against others but you are racing your PR's ? Sounds like competition to me!

I use Garmin connect, and I seem to remember that you had a garmin device so I assume you already use that.

Garmin connect is my main because it lets me analyze everything I do, yearly, monthly, daily, weekly, physiological changes and trends, so its basically my little ride diary and its all about me.

I use Strava because my friend asked me to, but I don't care about it supposed competitive nature as its clearly marketing. I always ride for myself, not to impress anyone but me :p
