StageONE power meters

I'm interested

If they work as promised then I might get one for my TT bike as it seems like a neat solution and I can upgrade the cranks. But I am pretty happy with my PT wheel. Might be best to wait until after they are released and DC Rainmaker does a review and other feedback comes in.

All that DC Rainmaker has so far:

They are taking pre-orders now. Kimm-san asked if they will ship to Japan and the answer was no! But the guy dropped a big hint about using a mail forwarding serivce like: https://www.expatexpress.com/Expat/jsp/mall/
He did say that they are working on finding a Japanese distributor.

There are comments on this on the slowtwitch site and the Wattage group on google (you need to sign up to read that one though). Basically, the argument is that simply multiplying the left side power by 2 is not accurate, as the balance (left to right) is very rarely 50-50. This is fine, if whatever your usual ratio is, always applies, but the argument is (only quoting what I have read) that the ratio is not consistent and can vary due to quite a few factors both day-to-day and during an actual ride or interval session. Whether this `variation` though is sufficient to actually matter for us ordinary folk is another question, so like Astroman says, I would wait and see how the comparison tests turn out after it has been released. Btw it is only $100 less than I paid for my Powertap and you can get a Power2max with an FSA Gossamer crank for 840 Euros

I had a talk with their CEO. They are kind of weird. They are selling to LBS but no plans to sell into Japan (or Europe) until late 2013. As you said - they are fine with any 'greymarketing' through a US LBS. Not sure what their hassle is with establishing dealers in non-US countries -maybe their technology is so cool the US Govt won't allow it to be exported --- or because its made in the US it can't pass TU/CE stds.. who knows?

The LBS discount isn't that great, either , so, combined with the dropping yen, crappy discount and locked into alloy arms only , hmmmm, Powertap or other SRM device still seems a better bet.

I used to make these type of loadcell systems when I was in aircraft engineering - it's a pretty good technology overall and great these folks are pursuing it. I'd be curious how it stacks up to even the simple PowerCal HR method.

Stages Power Meter In-Depth Review

Cut to the chase summary:

In summary, at present I don't feel that the Stages Power unit will work for me as my primary power meter. The variations in data from workout to workout, and the variations within a workout make it difficult to analyze and come to meaningful conclusions on power-focused workouts. I do however feel that with more work on the software side, they may be able to stabilize some of the power outputs and ultimately simply have a known offset (due to left-leg power). However, there are still significant unanswered questions around how stable ones power balance is from left to right on both an individual basis, as well as throughout varying conditions over the course of training or racing.
