I need to change my cables and I was wondering what to get. I always buy the basic Shimano ones but I might try something different. Has anyone tried the more premium stuff? Was it any different or just the same? Also, I'd be interested to hear member's thoughts on the Jagwire brand.

I ended up buying the mid-price Shimano cable. The blurb said it's got some kind of coating on so I'll see how that goes.

If you weren't having major probs before you will be fine. All the pricier stuff is higher stiffer grade wire which has less compression supporting the inside liner . It can help with dodgy shifting caused by compression.

For future ref shimano has 2 types of coated cable. Optislick is the green Teflon one that tends to shred/ flake off. Some complain it causes the shifting to gum up. Polymer coated is the higher end one (ultegra/ DA level) which seems better.
