Anybody know much about cycling hill SF?
Will be there next week and contemplating hiring a bike for a day.

Can you ride/walk accross the Golden Gate? Thinking of doing a lap across the 3 main bridges.

Will be staying at Berkeley.

From there

Hi
I'm from SF that's where I learned to pedal a racing rig
You can pedal the GG bridge, the cycling beyond is absolutely fantastic going north towards Sausalito and MIll valley towards Mt Tam is insanely good.
Going south is great, you need to head as far west as possible and head south on the great highway, after about an hour you will see the some of the best road cycling in the USA. My old club Penninsula Velo has a big presence there and the group weekend rides can be very large and extremely friendly.

I believe is the website.
I thing doing all three bridges would not be as fun but may be an interesting experience.
Enjoy.

San Francisco Grand Prix will be missed forever.

Personally I'd take the BART to SF then use the bike from there. Going across bridge - make sure you get breakfast at Fred's in Sausalito (early am). Then once fueled - you have so many choices! Like Lyle says Mt. Tam is great, you can also go up north to Napa Valley, etc. Or go up SF Drake and onward to Tamales - then get some fresh oysters at Hog Island. Anyway - enjoy!! Even riding around GG Park is cool - and down the Aves to the beach.

If in Berkley don't have time to waste commuting then ride 3 bears

Or Mount Diablo, if it was good enough for the TOC I am sure you will Love it!

Then their is the famed Paradise Loop

But the end all be all is SF to Santa Cruz down Highway one

This one changed my life, Many times over. You have to take ac transit from Santa Cruz to San Jose and then Caltrain back to the city from there but this ride is epic and will always be on your top 5, I promise you this.

Highway one north all the way to Bodega bay is a some tough guy stuff

If you want some mount tam action Go around the backside and hit Alpine Dam and then Seven Sisters
http://www.mapmyride.com/s/routes/view/bike-ride-map/california/san-francisco/21862456 (after you finish the seveth sister, trust me you will know when you get their, turn left to go to the top of mount Tam. I see that the wrighter of the map didnt man up to the summit)

This does not even touch the brim of the riding, hell you can even hitMount Hamilton or Paderson Pass Man I could really go on forever!

Call ahead and Big Swingin Cycles will save a steed for you. Tell them Chuck sent you.

Honestly though, with the lack of decent MTB trails in Japan, if I were in the bay area for a week, I would divvy up my Time, 80 percent MTN 20 percent road. The trail riding in the bay area (duh, its where the MTB was invented)
is unrivaled. Big Swingin rents bad trail bikes to, and will tell you where all the spots are. Mostly only accessible by car.

Thanks for all the great info.
I'll be there on work and possibly won't have time but hoping to get a day off and there is plenty here for me to use if that's the case.
Looks like SF is a great place to own a bicycle...
Those hills won't be nice in my current state though.
