Welcome competition for Garmin?

The device has both GPS and telecommunication functions (for weatherforecast, etc.) According to the original article in Japanese, Pioneer will pay communication fees to NTT DOCOMO for the first 2 years . Max life of fully charged battery: only 10 hours and not replaceable :hammer:

Pioneer To Release GPS For Bikes Next Year.TOKYO (Nikkei)--Pioneer Corp. (6773) will market a global positioning system for bicycles in Japan this February.

The gadget, dubbed PotterNavi , will be available in international markets including the U.S. and Europe next summer.

The device -- measuring 6cm wide, 9cm high and 1.8cm thick -- will be mounted on the stem of a bike. It will show not only maps and directions but also popular spots. PotterNavi also has a menu for encouraging healthy biking, including readouts for the pace of pedaling and calories burned.

Pioneer will also provide a service to store biking data online.

The navigation system is expected to retail for around 40,000 yen. Sales are targeted at 100,000 units in fiscal 2012 and 1 million units in fiscal 2015.
