I crossed paths with an old friend/colleague last Feb. at a conference (as usual), and he mentioned that he was going to try to qualify for and enter this.

Well, I heard from him a few days ago, and he apparently rode enough long ones that he's in, and will be starting a little later at 23:30 JST (16:30 local). Says his optimistic goal is 60 hrs, but perhaps would just like to finish w/in 80. Wants to stay ahead of traffic.

He sent me this link: http://suivi.paris-brest-paris.org/index.php and I have his frame number. What info will I be able to follow there? Departure and then checkpoints? Anything more, anything else?

Does anyone else know anyone who's trying this?

Looks like he's started, and that this will be the format:

I hope he's not overdoing it! I wonder if per-stage averages are available anywhere.

Apparently getting bunched up and then losing time getting thru checkpoints is one problem.

There is some activity on Instagram following a Japanese rider

Not sure where I met the guy posting the updates, may have been through Rapha.

Slower, will have to look at what stage 2 climbing is:

My friend Peter has made it to Brest. I think he's doing this pretty much on his own. I'm sure his wife is along, and there might be a person or two over from Scotland (family), but I doubt he has the kind of "support team" that the leaders do.

26hrs to Brest probably gives him a good chance at his overall goal of 60.

Still going, tho I'd guess he has had a few hours sleep:

I hadn't realized, but the outbound stage from start to Villaines is broken into three on the way back.

No change in numbers, but noticed this message below the chart:

"Il y a actuellement des problèmes de connexions avec Carhaix, Tinteniac, Fougères et Villaines.
Nous ne recevons donc pas les heures de passages de ces contrôles.
Veuillez nous en excuser."

Google tells me they're saying that there are connection issues with a few checkpoints. I suppose everything's okay...

That is some gruelling action right there, for sure. Christ alive.

Somewhere in one of the instagram posts in the links above, it slipped out that the frame number for the fellow from Rapha, Yano-san, was A098. This says he has finished the ride--1230km in 43:23...!

And he actually speeds up at the end:

He finished in the lead group.
Masahiko Mifune is the guy who did it, the bloke taking the photos is part of their support team.

Well, it took the organizers a while to straighten out their "connection" issues (still some numbers missing), the fellow I know from Hakodate finished like this--a little over his 60hr goal:

It was some years back that I saw a gear/bike summary for the PBP--tires sizes, saddles, etc. If anyone stumbles across that kind of info this time around, please post a link. Thanks!

Try "A survey of the equipment in Paris–Brest–Paris 2007": "[W]e looked for relationships between a variety of equipment choices, riders' finishing times, and DNF rates. We checked these relationships for statistical significance. Unless noted specifically, only statistically significant relationships are reported here."

Great job, both of them.

David and me attended the Giro Dolomoti in the Italian alps end of July/start of August. 11.000 Elevation Meters, 660 km in six days. Or, five, as day #6 was a joke.

For David it was prapration for PBP, for me iz was the highlight of this year's season.
You can see some pics and read (in German although) about it here:
