Aug 12 - Okutama lake loop

All,

I am going to challenge a route that I made, it has a few climbs and one is short and the other is long, but the decent's look sweet and the ride around Okutama lake is great.

I did a ride similar in profile to this one last weekend with Chikako, and this looks like another great ride.

I will warn you that I have not done this route so its new to me and looks challenging, so if you don't like climbing then this is not for you, but its a great chance to come out and improve your skills as the pace will be moderate to go-at-your-own-pace and I always wait at the top. This will be a really nice ride with great lake scenery, and I will make a stop for a brief lunch (place undecided as its all new to me).

I noticed two things, (1) there is obvialsly three climbs including Takao (2) the route below includes a rather long tunnel, so I'm willing to reroute around Tsuru pass.

Route:

Distance 131km, depending on where you start - I will meet people at Takao (730am) or Uenohara (830am ish).

Hmmm, tempted ... its either this or a flat TT fest at Oifuto...

Well I don't know what you need for training, but I think this will be good hard ride, at least for me.

I'll be going to bed soon so if your in let me know by email if you want to meet, takao or whatever.

route 20 starts to get pretty bad towards uenohara. I'd suggest heading towards the kobu tunnels from the junction with the 522. like you're heading towards wada-toge. there are a few steep spots by the golf course but it's a nicer route. see this route for the section I'm talking about.

Thanks for the route suggestion, you were right on the money.

This was a very challenging ride, relentless climbing made even better by the fact they were rollers - after a while I just wanted to stop the descents and get on with it already.

It was really nice riding for all of the climbing, and the descent from Tomin no mori was actually not as fun as when you go down back to the train station.

Thanks again.

Josh

i'm glad the route change around uenohara worked out. i like to stay off the 20 whenever i can.
Here's another suggestion for future rides. I'm not a big fan of the okutama to oume section of oume-kaido. You can avoid that by doing a little more climbing and going the nokogiri route.

i have yet to do this section but i hear it's lovely.

I agree, that was pretty much the worst section with me getting regularly cut off, and one special moment when I was taking a drink and two cars cut me off - the second guy ran me into the gutter. It's a good thing I was paying attention.

I have to say that adding another 1k climb would be a push, but I guess that's half the fun.
