Anyone up for a Boso (Chiba) run? It's a still a bit early for a proper Koyo Boso, but perhaps a good time for another back roads exploration...

Start: Honda (誉田) Station (JR Sotobo Line)
Day: Saturday Nov 3rd
Time: Rollout around 8:30/9:00 AM, back 4 pm latest
Finish: Honda Station
Pace: Moderate to quick road bike pace; lots of ups and downs and many turns, so not recommended for absolute beginners.
Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1837290
About 120 kms

We haven't really hit the rindos alongside Yoro Gorge in a while, and I've recently found another rindo stretch north of Takataki that gets us into the hills even quicker. We'll use the Uguisu line to get south--not nearly as nice as the usual route, but it connects nicely to the rindos--then follow the hills all the way to Kameyama Lake. We'll loop the lake and take in a rindo climb there, and after that we'll use the 172-173 roads that we took on the last Boso ride to get back to Takataki and thence the familiar route home. So, a few new stretches for the veterans, and a nice introduction to the Boso interior for newcomers.

Pace will be fairly quick as we want to get back before dusk, but based on recent Boso rides, 4 pm should be no problem. We'll try to limit it to 2, 3 stops at the most.

Anyway, would love to get a good group together--haven't done a TCC ride since the summer, which seems ages ago!

Hi Phil,

Just wondering if there is a chance you can do a ride somehow similar to this this coming Saturday? The reason I am asking is because I will be at my in-laws in Toke - so I'm up to any ride, start early and come back around noon time. If you are not available, it is fine and no need to worry!

Regards,
Jessie

Hi Jessie--definitely, I need to scout the route. Did you get my email? Will PM as well.

Hi Phil,

Didn't get your email but just received your priv msg. 9:15 should be fine! I'll definitely join you this weekend, but will need to let my wife know of the time first.

I'll give you my contact details (in case you lost) again in priv msg.

Cheers,
Jessie

Hi Phil,

Autumn Boso sounds so tempting, but I'm working that Saturday.
残念。
Have a good ride!

Phil, I'd like to join this ride.

I had a pleasure to ride with Phil today, who were kind enough to show me the backroads, rindos and country roads of Chiba. I have no words but all praises to Phil with how beautiful the course is. Thanks very much Phil - as discussed, next time I will be inviting the members of my group to tackle the roads of Chiba once again.

This ride is really recommended.

Thanks!

Thanks for the company on the scouting run, Jessie, and for the 155(!) pics.

It was definitely a good route, though we had to do the flatter section on the way back due to time. Even got the Jessie seal of approval...

As for next week...

Chikako > Sorry you can't make it this time... Want to do a koyo run a little later too, so hopefully the schedule will work out then.

TimeTraveler (Kevin, is it??) > Will be great to have you along--looking forward to meeting you!

Joiners so far (confirmed and tentative)

Train Info

How does a 9:15 AM rollout sound to everyone?

There are a few decent train options here...

(EDIT: Er, sorry, failed to mention that these routes and times are from Tokyo station.)

07:50~08:33
JR京葉線快速
08:40~08:49
JR外房線・茂原行
(JR Keisei to Soga, change there to the Sotobo bound for Mobara)

OR

07:41~08:24
JR横須賀・総武線快速
08:33~08:49
JR外房線・茂原行
(JR Yokosuka/Sobu Kaisoku to Chiba, change there to the Sotobo bound for Mobara)

Gathering spot will be south exit, around the combini there. We will stop again approx. 30 kms in before we hit the rindos, so no need to load up with food at the station.

Phil, the time is okay for me. I will PM you my contact information.

I look forward to meeting you.

Cheers,
Kevin

Could be up for this.

Too early in the week to know my schedule for the weekend, but if I am free I am in.

Bit of a massive train journey in the morning to get there, but if you are starting around 9am that will be OK.

Basil > Jesse and I did almost the same route but with flatter return and got back by 3 pm. So even with larger group and more hills, 4 pm should be no problem. Will keep breaks reasonably short.

Owen > Would be brilliant if you can make it! Think you'll like the terrain down there, so hopefully it would be worth the train effort...

I'm sad to state that I cannot make it this time. We're moving into a new house by the end of November and have to start wrapping up our household.

Have a great ride and please post pics!:)

Thomas > Really sorry you can't make it. Good luck with the move and setting up the new place!

Eurysaces > Will be great to have you along!

So, just to keep track, group as of today is as follows:

Basil
Travis
TimeTraveler
Eurysaces
Phil
(and a tentative Owen)
