Actually is was a major-ish op, though under local anesthetic. Quite scary being wheeled into an operating theater with five robed ladies waiting for me ...

The tumor was about half the size of a pencil eraser - looked like one too! I think the doc knew how big it was going to be, so arranged for me to be admitted for a few days.

Still on a drip, and with a huge dressing on my head - like something from a Laurel and Hardy film.

I will have regular checks for bleeding and infection, but too soon to say how things will progress.

I just tried to go walkabout, but was ordered back to bed. They are worried about the dressing, but if it wasn't so absurdly huge, it wouldn't be so hard to keep straight!

No it's a very minor op. they take out a tiny lump no more than about 5 mm deep max.
They are scamming you or more likely your insurance co. Had 3 of those and a nastier one for which they annex to keep me in... Incase! Of what?....
Golden rule for all medical treatment and prescribed medicines..
Ask " is this really necessary?"

This sucker was closer to 2cm deep. Looked quite impressive.

That was my first question! But the jar was whisked away for checking. :-(

Wound is still bleeding a fair bit, so another night of being serenaded by gentlemen's gas and snoring approaches ...

I was fortunate to have caught this before it before it got even bigger, but unfortunate that it took me so long to even notice it was there. The moral of the story is: always check behind your ears.
 
Oh joy of joys. At this rate I am going to need an entire sub-forum just focussed on my medical woes ... :(

I've just been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of my right knee. I've suspected it for a while, but had been blaming the leg pain on my back problems. However, osteoarthritis it is.

Of course cycling is an ideal 'low impact' (the way I ride it is!) sport to keep my knee mobile and maintain strength ~ but I'm wondering if any fellow TCC'ers are also living with knee OA. And if so, how are they managing/treating it. Recommendations of doctors/specialists (especially English-speaking ones) would be most welcome.

I suffer on and off from this most during the off season when I mess myself up racing CX or weight training and have a combination of treatments to deal with it.

On a weekly basis I have liquid drained from the knee cavity followed by a hyaluronic acid shot in to the knee cavity.

Also I have regular Modulated TENS session, massage and the most important STRETCHING!

My doctor pointed out that one of the biggest causes of knee pain is that I'm not limber and my already narrow joints on my knee rub more due to this.

I would give you the names of the 3 specialists that work with me however I live in the middle of nowhere and they don't speak Japanese.
 
At the serious risk of being derided for stating some obvious knee pain strategies:
* if the knee hurts in the front try raising the saddle a little
* one of those 1000 yen knee supporters from any drugstore in Japan may be very helpful for support and localized warmth
* be aware there may be a correlation between seiza posture and knee pain the next day
* setting up so your lowest gear is really low (like 30/27, yeah a triple!, until the knee improves) means no hill need stress your knee.

I haven't done it yet but I think its a good idea: shell out money for a professional bike fit, explain your knee is hurting.

I would suggest getting and MRI done and the photos on CD asking the doctor to highlight where the joint clearance is minimal due to osteoarthritis - that way fitter will know EXACTLY what the problem is....you did have an MRI and X-ray to prove without a doubt you have osteoarthritis, right?

My company has developed a MRI guided focused ultrasound device for various conditions, which a group of Orthopedic doctors from Kochi University hospital are using to non-invasively treat knee OA associated pain. Thanks for all the feedback about my grungy knee. So far I've had X-rays and diagnosis by a very competent, but very busy, local specialist. He favors a rapid throughput of patients, and isn't into long consultations! I'm not inclined to doubt the diagnosis, but of course my next step will be to have an MRI and seek out a more 'cooperative' doctor.

I've been off the bike for getting on for a year due to my disc hernias (which I had for too long blaming for my knee pain), so the recent knee pains aren't bike-fit related ~ though of course going forward a professional fit will help me ride with less pain, and less likelihood of causing more damage.

(My back is now tickedy-boo, so I should be back in the saddle soon - touch wood ...)
