Today March 2020

Your drive to be out there is inspirational......it really is.
I often marvel at your posts......rain,shine or wind.....absolutely awesome.
I know you are way more younger than me but it is still great.

today seems to be the last rainy and cold day, and mid next week onward the spring is on (at least in Tokyo). hope we get at least a month of it before the rain season kicks in...

tomorrow switches from north in the 1st part of the day, to southern mid day and on. Monday looks like ridiculous north wind whole day

You call it drive, my wife calls it stupidity or a death wish depending on the day.

yeah, it's like that with my partner too. when she's out she calls it jogging, but I call it running around ;)

March 14 and snowing. This is what I expect back in the Midwest of the US but not in Tokyo..which hasn't had a snowfall but once till now.

well you have these guys resurrecting the February thread now, what did you expect eh

Next we'll have dogs and cats playing together, or maybe bloaker will sell all his bikes and take up knitting.

there are days when the weather is great and outside is so inviting but one has to stay at home. today was such a day for me, so I decided to at least give the bikes a good wash and checkup. it's been almost 3 months for Lynskey, which, considering I ride it almost every other day, is far from ideal. I do drivetrain only washing ups in between these major ones, so it's reasonably clean (read functioning) usually

for the fast bike, it must have been at last 7-8 months, but I maybe rode it 5-6 times at most since getting the fun bike ↑ last August

anyway, I am again confident in entrusting my life to both bikes and looking forward to the next long weekend and beyond

Last night I celebrated my birthday with my most frequent riding buddy.
Original plan was to hit Yakiniku and have a drink or 2.

BUT - as things always happen, when it came time to eat - we changed our minds and hit "Match Point" instead.

Zushi isn't dead, but there are less people out than normal.
The restaurants all had available seating.
When we walked into Matchpoint, we were greeted with a smile and a bottle of sanitizer hat they sprayed into our hands as we sat down, but before we could touch anything. I am totally happy with this greeting!!!

This is the heaviest meal I have eaten all year, but my lunch was super light just because I was running around with my girls, grocery shopping, trying to wash cars, and general clean up stuff. So the heavy meal was worth every bit.

Started off with Wings & a Chu-hi.
Followed it with German Potatoes (diced potatoes, onions, bacon, mustard)
And then Mexican Pizza & second Chu-hi! The pizza was shaved beef with Jalapenos and taco seasoning.

All in all - filling without leaving me feeling sick.

@microcord wanted to do another Kazahari rindo ride on Sunday and I was happy to join him, but then it started snowing in Tokyo on Saturday and I quickly decided on a "no crash" course in warmer climates. Boso is the place to ride when everywhere else is too cold and icy to ride. So I picked the 8:20 ferry from Kurihama to Kanaya and that's where @microcord and I met up on Sunday morning.

I drove 60 km down to Kurihama, parked the car in a car park adjacent to the Ferry terminal and unloaded the bike (no disassembly needed when the rear seats are folded forward). I bought my ticket and boarded at 8:10 with no other participants in sight, but we met up in the lounge.

It was about 35 km from the port to Sunosaki lighthouse at the westernmost point of Chiba, but first we visited the observation tower at Cape Daibusa which offers a 360 degree panorama of southern Chiba with Miura (Kanagawa), Izu (Shizuoka) and Izu Oshima (Tokyo). We could see mountains and coastlines somewhere between Ito and Shimoda some 70 km away. The only thing not visible that would have been visible had there not been any cloud cover was Mt Fuji.

Near Tateyama we came across an old bicycle shop with had an old bicycle (1950s era) with auxiliary combustion engine outside. The engine could be engaged and disengaged as needed by moving a roller against the rear wheel. It had a suspension front fork but no front brake!

We stopped for lunch at Chinese restaurant. Moving from one offered table to another because the guys at the adjacent table were smoking, we found guys at another table lighting up as we were waiting for our food. A total ban on smoking in restaurants can't come soon enough!

On the way back we stopped off at Daifuku-ji, a Buddhist temple built into a cliff side in Tateyama. There are a few more interesting temples in Boso that I'd like to visit on future trips.

We made it back to the ferry with plenty of time before the 16:30 departure of the later of the two return ferries that we had planned for. After getting off the boat we loaded both bikes into the car, @microcord's bike on top of mine, with some strategically placed floor mats in between to keep them from becoming too friendly with each other, and I drove us back to Tokyo.

Cycling is a great way to get away from crowded places where one might get infected with nasty viruses, but given the desperate measures in Wuhan and Italy I do hope we won't get to a state where everyone is expected to stay home for weeks when even cyclists could be asked to explain themselves if they are found on public roads while socially distancing themselves from the crowds of the city...
