You are now able to select which language you would like the TCC website interface to be displayed in.

The language can be switched in User Preferences https://tokyocycle.com/bbs/account/preferences.

We are at the very beginning of this particular development, so expect bugs.

At the time of posting this update, we only offer support for English (US) and German, but will be expanding the choice as fast as we can, which is where you come in. If there are any languages you would like to see supported, please post them here. We realise that Japanese is most likely going to be a popular request, and we are already working on that, but due to the nature of Japanese text formatting this is going to take, well as long as it takes. So, assume that that Japanese is already confirmed as a language that will be supported, and suggest to us other languages you would like to see.

As well as the technical bugs with the new language support, we also realise that the language itself may not be perfect at first. For now, please hold off on correcting any language issues, until we have the technical side dealt with. When we are ready, we may indeed offer up the various languages in the form of editable language packs for collaborative editing.

For now, any language requests, suggestions, questions, technical (not language based) errors, etc., are as ever very welcome!

Thanks.

P.S., if you decide to switch to a language you are unfamiliar with, just to see how it works, make sure you know how to switch it back!

Simplified Chinese added.

As well as providing language support for our Chinese speaking visitors, the inclusion of this Asian character set will act as a bug/trial test eventually leading to full Japanese language support.

Update

Languages are now instantly switchable using the new dropdown menu next to the Classified drop down menu.

At this point, the language selector menu does not change from English, no matter the language selected. This will be dealt with later.

Thanks.

We are aware of the issue with the drop down language menu and are working to fix it as soon as possible.

Languages can still be switched in user preferences and also at the very bottom of the page.

Your patience is appreciated.

Thanks.

French has now been added.

Spanish; any particular variety of Spanish?

Edit; Spanish has now been added. For want of a better way to describe it, this is the 'standard' Spanish language. We have access to a number of variants, should they be necessary, so please do let us know if alternative forms of Spanish are required.

For the time being, please select the display languages in the Preferences section. We are working on fixing the issue with the drop down language selection menu, and will bring that back online as soon as possible.

Thanks.

Japanese Language Support

Predictably, there is very little in the way of Japanese language support for web-forum software, and as a result we have not been able to find any compatible third party Japanese language packs to enable us to offer a proper translation of the website in Japanese. Not being shy of a challenge, we have decided to take matters into our own hands and construct our own.

Without getting too technical, making a language pack involves the 'simple' task of telling the software the website runs on to replace every word and phrase of the original language (in this case English) with whatever the new language is. The additional languages we have so far added support for have all been done in the same way, and thankfully we were able to find third-party purpose made language packs for the software the site runs on, so once the ability to deal with the language packs was added, it was 'just' a case of plugging in the new languages and getting them running.

Now, with Japanese, for whatever reason, there are no language packs available. At all. We need to make one.

So, this is a request; a language pack for this website consists of around 5000 words/phrases. That is a fair amount of translating. Now, through some clever programming, we have managed to bring this number down to around half of that, which we are pleased with, but means that there are still around 2500 words/phrases to translate.

Sooooo... if any of you have the urge to help us translate some of this, to ease the work load, we would be very grateful! It would just be a case of reading the English phrase, then translating that into Japanese. You do not have to be familiar with programming, or anything like that; we will deal with the technical side of things. You would need to be willing to install a small, free, open source bit of software capable of editing with .xml files, which we can advise you on, if needs be, and have a Google account with access to Google Drive for sharing the files. The nature of the translations will mostly be basic instructions / software interface stuff, like 'Open File', 'Close File', 'File exceeds size limit', 'Stop trying to DDOS the server, Franz', etc.

Full credit for anybody choosing to help will be given, of course, and also hard-coded into the final Japanese language pack file, so anybody using it outside of the club will be able to see who helped create it (anonymity requests are also fine!).

Thanks.

Oh, excellent thank you!

We will wait to see if anybody else wants to join in, then put together an instruction kit.

Much appreciated.

Count me in. Broken arm = no cycling = might as well do something constructive

hmmm, I'm not sure if I'd rather lose my beer arm, or the one that runs the remote.

Great thanks!

OK, we need some time to prepare the language pack for translating, which will take a day or two. It will be split up alphabetically, to make thing more manageable.

To read the files, and to be able to effectively edit them, you will need an IDE. MonoDevelop is good, as is Eclipse. Both of these will colourcode, the erm, code, so you don't go insane when trying to read it.

Really appreciate your assistance on this. Genuinely, please do not feel any pressure to do any more than you want. Even a tiny amount is a great help.

The more the merrier! It does not matter what operating system you run. There are free IDE's on every system. If you want to get involved, the first thing to do is get a Google account (you will have one if you have a Gmail account) and let us know your Gmail address via PM. You will then be invited into the shared folder with the language pack in, which has now been divided up into letters of the alphabet to make the task less daunting.

You will need to install a free IDE. There are a large number of these available, each with its' own charm, but for consisitency, and also so we can offer the most effective support if you get stuck, it would be best to stick to MonoDevelop or Eclipse. These are both available on Linux, Win and Mac. MonoDevelop has recently gone through a giant update/re-write and may very well be called Xamarin now, so if you can not find MonoDevelop, search for Xamarin and install that. For what we will be using it for, this change in name / update, does not affect anything.

Thanks.

Invites sent to those who have offered to help, to the Google Drive folder containing the language pack.

Please read the 'READ THIS FIRST' file before you touch anything!

And once again, a big thank you to those who have offered to help. If anybody else would like to help out with the translation, in any way big or small, let us know and we will invite you into the Google Drive folder.

Thanks.

Curiously Xamarin won't allow direct input of Japanese on my Mac. I can copy and paste from a text field somewhere else.

Good to know there is another enlightened person out there in gobbledegookland. This stuff looks scary so I have downloaded the Xamarin but will look at it tomorrow when the coffee has kicked in.
