What's new

Today July 2020

Agreed, seems like Specialized's version of the Teammachine — race geometry, fast yet comfortable, loves corners, plenty of aero elements without begin an all-out aero bike — which is decidedly a good thing. I just wish I could love their color schemes …

Today I got told I'm cancer free and the oncologist never needs to see me again. Feel like buying some bling to celebrate.

(he quietly advisedme to me to stop all sugar and wheat products, which seems like advice worth following). Interestingly he gave the job of giving me the good news to a young medical student, maybe it's good to see some positive cases?

was that a regular checkup @kiwisimon ? or did they look for something specific? ok sugar I get, but if you exclude any wheat products what are you gonna be left with? what's the thinking behind that? drop any and all carbohydrates?

I was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015. Had a tickle in my throat for months that I thought was allergies or a cold or over use of my vocal chords. My local ear, nose and throat specialist took one look and I was getting a biopsy 10 days later. 10 days after that the radiation course started. here is a thread I had on RBR which I signed off on for good today. No one there knows who I am.

I am thinking the doctor was trying to tell me that refined grains are not good. He never said anything about rice or other grains. Maybe good versus not so good carbohydrate sources? Not too sure.

ok, I kinda jumped to equate wheat with all grains, but probably not... but wow! I just read a first part of that thread, but you basically spent the last 5 years fighting cancer? and winning?! congrats

Kind of a boring read for most - but maybe interesting for you since the doctor mentioned grains. Whole vs Refined and diabetes. So not exactly the same thing - but interestingly related.

First of all, congratulations. And yes, celebrate life!
My cousin was diagnosed with a glioblastoma (an aggressive form of brain cancer) last year, and he was told the same — cut as much sugar as you can since it makes tumors grow more rapidly. He has since switched to a keto diet and even published a keto cook book with his wife. So this seems to be a common recommendation, at least when having cancer. I don't know whether he is supposed to continue after he has beaten cancer (which in his case, is unfortunately not likely).

I'm not sure of the diet angle, but for the second part/phase of a PET scan they inject glucose (and a marker to track it?). Then you relax for ~15min while it circulates and goes where it's 'wanted'. Then a rescan in the same machine. The glucose goes to tumors, where that biological activity then shows up on the scan as a bright spot.

Just beware keto has side effects too.
Any diet that has a known "flu" associated with it... "Nausea, constipation, headaches, fatigue and sugar cravings"
I researched it for a bit and decided not for me. BUUUUUTTTTT - I don't have a medical condition that could push me through the downfalls of Keto.
The side effects and risks of Keto read like a lot of medicines... they are worse than what you are trying to fix.

I would talk with your doctor prior to making that decision.
