What's new

Joetsu (Niigata prefecture) - Hokkaido

Today did not go as planned, at all!
After 20km going up the valley to get to road 349 which looked epic, I found out it's closed and broken at several places. After asking the locals I decide not to try it... 15k to go back on a parrallel of road 7, heading north. After 50k, first pit stop, I found out my rear tire is flat. Fixed once. Fixed twice... I end up at the back of the truck of Suzuki's garage owner to go pick up a new tube! mine was opening All along the junction, maybe because of yesterday's hot temperature...
The first shop didn't have the right size, the second, an amazing old guy, was the good one!
Did I mention a crow stole my food bag while I was waking around the village searching for a tube?!
The afternoon was way easier, by the coast, tailwind, a bit of rain to keep the temperature acceptable, I did more than I was suppose to!

Tomorrow mont Chōkai!

Good to read that you were able to ride on after such an unfortunate start in the day.
Those little set backs and twists and turns are making the story of your adventure in the end.
Safe travel.

For Mt. Chokai, much like Mt. Yahiko, you can go up one side of the Blue Line and come down the other.

Zoom in and there is a little 'no entry' section but I reckon you might be okay.

Maybe I sounded a bit dramatic but I totally agree with you, it's the best part of the trip: the unknown, when you're meeting the best persons helping you and get yourself out of these tricky situations!

short night yesterday as I set up my tent in a public park, turns out there were birds nearby, the rooster starting singing at 3am!
The first 30km flat and cloudy I wasn't able to see my objective of the day: mount Chokai!
I started the climb with another cyclist who was deaf mute, it made the communication way easier, no need for my bad Japanese !
It's 17km from sea level to 1150m, really nice climb: never more than 10% and Some flat parts to relax a bit the legs.
By the time I was up the sun was shining and I could enjoy this amazing view!
Then downhill, playa, sun burn and sunset in yurihonjo. Good good day!
