What's new

Today January 2023

Yes, I do love a good night ride but it's finding the energy after the commute home to get geared up without drinking a beer.

Edit: Clicked on the video and there was a nice video but man, the music, get rid of it and have some natural sounds going on if you can. The music kind of disjointed the experience of watching you glide along the route.

I get it. The music isn't nearly my first choice. If I had the time to actually edit myself vs letting gopro do it for me, it would be a bit better.
I am pretty sure the raw video is posted on Gopro. There is some talking as I am giving my friends who used to live here a heads up on where I am so they can see how the trail has changed/evolved. - That also might be annoying.

What lights are you using?
I am very happy with NiteRider Lumina lights.
I have a 1000 & 900 on my bars and an additional 1000 on my helmet.
The 1000 is $60 stateside a little pricier here in Japan.

Man, that's some good commentary there - looks bonkers at night time. How far ahead can you see as you're going down those routes?

I would say in the fast straight bits - I have about 40-50m of light.
In the turns it is far less, but luckily I have these particular trails memorized - so I am looking out more for things that have changed than how it is.
Trail knowledge is key to night riding with any kind of speed.
Night riding will also let you know quickly how much you don't pay attention when it is light out.

Completely different perspective..

Lights comparison....
Tonight in the parking lot just prior to my gravel climb...

Standing behind my bike to take both pics.

Tonight was more exciting than last night.
I had the faster bike - and I rode it accordingly....
The bike was saved by this root... I was not.

I had to scale back up the embankment to almost reach the top... then my footing gave way and I slid back down farther than the initial fall... A little patience and a little cursing.... but i made it back up.

So, do you also have a helmet light so you could see what you were doing on the climb back up? Hope no injuries.

Being the old man that I am, I went out for a spin today on safe, flat, paved stuff. Not a fan of cold and windy but pretty tired of indoor trainer. This is my old CAAD5. Still like it. Harsher ride than my Road Logic though.

Such a nice looking bike.

On Sunday I went for a ride in Boso (102 km on Strava) via the Tokyowan ferry from Kuriyama to Kanaya. I hadn't been doing any rides the last two weekends.

Boso is nice for winter rides because you never have to worry about snow and ice even in January/February.

I drove down to Miura early in the morning to catch the 08:20 ferry.

s800.jpg

On the ferry I came across a 1936 Ford that had been restored to mint condition. Later I saw the same car again, at a gas station on the way back to Kanaya and talked to the owner. He confirmed the car was still on the original engine. Apparently there are no issues running it on unleaded fuel. The guy was travelling with a friend who drove his own classic car.

A couple of km south of Kanaya I turned away from the coast and into the hills to get some climbing. I managed to clear 5 tiles on roads that I had never traveled on before. I passed dairy farms, greenhouses for growing flowers and Showa era consumer credit ads.

Once I turned off the coast it became very overcast. I even felt some raindrops but it never started to drizzle.

At Chikura where I reached the east coast I came across some huge near windowless buildings with a microwave tower and a high security barbed wire fence. It turned out to be Softbank telecommunications facility that connects to an international fiber-optics cable off the coast. About 1 km down the road I found an equivalent KDDI building and no doubt somewhere nearby there was also an NTT building.

I enjoyed the ocean views which were quite atmospheric with all the clouds. The road was pretty flat and traffic wasn't too bad.

I had written down the ferry schedule on a piece of paper which I kept in the map window on top of the front bag. The last ferry was at 19:20 but there were others about an hour and two hours earlier.

I could have gone to the westernmost point of Chiba as well as the southernmost at Shirahama which I passed but by keeping it about 10 km shorter the 17:20 ferry would let me enjoy the sunset near the ferry port or on the boat so I chose my return route based on that.

Near Kanaya I came across this "boat" built from pieces of driftwood.

My bike was the 4th vehicle to get on the ferry, after three motorbikes. I took some pictures from the top deck before we set off for the crossing, then had a cup of coffee in the passenger lounge. I was the first to ride off the ferry after it docked in Kurihama. A few minutes later I was back at the car. 102 km and the Wahoo still showed 65% remaining charge.

The drive home was smooth.
