What I LOVE about Japan :

Pedestrians understand. They get it you are more mobile on a bike and let you avoid THEM. They hold their line. If they are inna bunch they make space and if they have kiddies or doggies they reel them in. In the states they tend to try to dodge you like chickens or think "On your left." means move to the left.
Also the other cyclists tend to pass on the left oncoming but if you happen to be on the right they don't fuss about it. Whatever works.

Both are prone to wildly irrational and unpredictable behaviour in my opinion and you'd best give both a very wide berth.

Here are some other threads that have touched on this topic:

There are many many more threads out there telling similar stories, unfortunately.

Just sayn the Peds have a much better understanding here.

I agree...but then compared to most places in the States, people here are generally more understanding and forgiving.

It also helps that cycling is a much more prevalent and accepted mode of transportation. From OLs and salarymen in suits to the old grandma on her mama-chari, nearly everyone is a cyclist...which in itself breeds empathy.

Gotta love Japan.

Bike shoe

Yeah ! I read somewhere that the Japanese look at bikes more like shoes than like cars. I think thats accurate but it leads to piles of abandoned bikes at the train stations. I say if the tires are flat and the chain is rusty it's free. We need some ethical bike thieves around here.
