What I LOVE about Japan :
Pedestrians understand. They get it you are more mobile on a bike and let you avoid THEM. They hold their line. If they are inna bunch they make space and if they have kiddies or doggies they reel them in. In the states they tend to try to dodge you like chickens or think "On your left." means move to the left.
Also the other cyclists tend to pass on the left oncoming but if you happen to be on the right they don't fuss about it. Whatever works.
