How About a Member's Bike Showcase Forum?

I enjoy this site a lot, but am surprised that there isn't any one place to go where I can see what the other folks here are riding (and why). Yes, there is a "review" section, but, that could cover anything from bearing grease to the latest bike computer, and the "introductions" are generally for newbies breaking into the fold, while the picture section is both random and eclectic--so, is there a section that I have simply overlooked?

If not, I am sure many of us would love to see what other folks are riding in a dedicated section--pictures with a bit about what they like about their bike(s) and what they don't--updates that they made that worked, and those that didn't, and so forth. I don't think the review section would work since most of our bikes are built from many different parts, not necessarily an off the line sample. On a few other forums in other walks of life, the member's showcase is often the most interesting part of the whole site. Any possibility of that happening here?

I see what you're saying - I'm a total lurker and it's weird that I should pipe up here of all places since it's not a particularly special area for me, but here's my 2 cents - used to look at other types of forums from time to time, (cars, motorcycles, etc etc) and though I did find those sections interesting, the people also got a bit, "ewwww" (for lack of better terminology) about it all as well.

If you asked me "Like how?" I'd say, dunno but that's how it felt to me.

By the way, I've just discovered that the comment entry box still doesn't let me move my cursor around... I know this isn't he place for that either.

Thanks, I assumed there must have been something--though this one (the "detailed-bike-build" thread), based on a quick glance, seems very heavy on the weight weenie side, still, I guess it is better than nothing--though I was really thinking more of a lighter approach--heavy on the picture and interesting comment side, rather than a part list/spec sheet with sometimes no comments and/or photos.

My other rather obvious objection to the "detailed bike thread" is that it is a single thread, which you would need to browse, with no real search criteria, every time you wanted to check out a bike, with no idea of what you may or may not find. But really, what an incredibly unfortunate thread that is--seven pages filled with a lot of bike part lists, and a whole lot more of mindless bickering about often quite trivial and usually irrelevant issues, and almost nothing on what was originally suggested in the first couple of posts regarding a place for members to show their bikes, pride of ownership, etc.

With a dedicated forum (gallery?), similar to the review section, but dedicated only to full bikes, one new thread for each new bike, one could browse the separate thread titles looking for the type of bike (or the builder/owner/member) they are specifically interested in checking out, by thread title, such as "My new Dogma" or something of that ilk, where critical comments on things like stem length, body fat, and bike cost might not come up as much.

Just start a thread,, show us your bike... put tags in for keywords... brand etc....

Used to be a great thread on this at cyclingforums but over the years with upgrades etc...it seems to have lost a lot of the pics..maybe a lot of old hotlinks are dead...

How would that be different from the "detailed bike thread" with its noted problems? don't you think a single thread is just about useless as an archive of any sort, and based on the "detailed" thread, likely it would take distracting detours. My suggestion is pretty simple, and based on what I see in many other sites (a member's showcase)--often the most popular forum on those sites--a forum that is dedicated to showcasing whatever members feel like sharing from their collection--one thread per featured piece, where folks can browse through, find something that seems interesting, and over time add to the archive--this doesn't work very well with just a single thread of featured pieces, comments, conversations, side-tracks, another featured piece, etc. What surprises me is that there isn't anything like that already here. Am I in the minority that I actually am more interested in what members can tell me about their bikes (of all types, old/new or road or off, etc.), versus whatever ride they are planning on Saturday, or how many sit ups they did on a rainy day?

But I understand also that what you want is a little more complicated to set up...and may not be used as much...maybe they'll set it up like that and give it a go...

Hahahahahaha, WHAT?!?!?

This is a CYCLING CLUB.

Haha, sorry, I am still laughing at this.

@timefleas mate, are you seriously suggesting that looking at photos of members bikes is preferable to the actual rides that all the members plan, post and then go on together, and then report back on? You do realise that through this activity, this site has facilitated not only the creation of a great number of real life and long lasting friendships, but also actual marriages between people? And as for your jibe at people posting training info... Haha. Amazing. Just amazing.

For the record, I think it might be cool to have some kind of bike gallery in a set place, but will have to work out the best way to do it and also if it will be worth the hassle (ie, if anyone will actually use it, what with Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc., being the main place for this kind of thing.)

@leicaman haha, yeah. If this is trolling, it is very good. I particularly like the 'letters of complaint to The Radio Times' tone taken in every post.

Some of you are taking this way too seriously, so please don't get me wrong, I am sure there are folks who enjoy counting sit ups or other impressive feats--and of course I am not suggesting that a member's showcase forum should replace anything, least of all details of rides--all I am suggesting is that IN ADDITION to all those wonderful things that can be found here, that there could also be a member's showcase section, as I have described above.

Anyway, as I say, it was, I thought, a pretty harmless yet constructive suggestion, based on experience in other forums--if you folks don't think it worth trying out, no problem--just thought it might add a nice feature to what is pretty much the only viable cycling site in Japan. I think I will bow out of this thread, I don't want to rile any more feathers, but do look forward to reading about and seeing what some of you folks ride, in one form or another--if it is in the "detailed" thread, so be it. Truly sorry to have bothered.

Couldn't this be revitalized/up dated for now? https://tokyocycle.com/bbs/media/categories/bicycle-garage.5/
It looks like a simple gallery, but I just went through all pages (I know it looks like I got too much time at hand and nothing to do). It took me what.....10min. So I wasn't missing any search function or the like. And since I now have a rough idea what is there, I'm only waiting for someone to add some new pictures.
This would work for me. But actually I'm here more for reading about planned/done rides, asking questions/getting help etc. All those kind of things that help me to improve and enjoy my cycling more. I think that's what keeps this place alive.

I agree with time fleas and I'd like to post a few pics of my good bike with all the stats and parts. But what about my junk, would you like to see photos of my junk too? I could post stats too if you'd like. Stem width, head diameter etc. please let me know if these are the kind of pics you are interested in for the new forum you want to create.

uh...I think a few pictures of your good bike would be a great place to start...who, knows, interest in your junk may follow...

So still hot for bike porn eh.

Porn is a bit repetitive and vulgar by nature, and there's various levels of quality but there's a time and place for it. Unfortunately, various types of porn gets shoved in our faces when we never asked for it - Hey check out my awesome new house! Look at what I'm about to eat! My cute exotic dog! My baaaby!! - and we put up with it, even applaud it sometimes.

In the end though, we all know what porn is for. It's best appreciated in private, and we al know what too much porn makes a person - rhymes with "banker" or "cyclo-crosser", among others.

Such that porn is best left as a private thing, bad form to go asking for it in public, dude.
