Hi everybody, my names Snowy, i moved here from australia about a month ago to follow my wife home, I've been off the bike for about 6 months due to work but I'm really keen to get fit again and into racing as soon as possible. I've been following the site for a while now since the decision was made to move to Japan and I look forward to meeting everyone and tackling some real climbs! western australia really only has harsh hills ...cant wait to join you guys soon

Welcome!:)

Welcome Snowy! You will be in biker's heaven here with the mountains compared to the desert over there. Enjoy.

yeah i cant wait for it, ive already sussed out a circuit through the mountains near hanno, hopefully ill be able to get there soon, ive already learnt that city ridings a waste of time....took me near on 3 and a half hours to go from shakujiikoen to kamata and back on kanpachi dori....a trip that i thought would take me 2 hours at most.

hopefully its doable but having said that itll no doubt be riddled with traffic lights or traffic going off my first few rides ive done everything looks better on google maps but i hope its one you steal rather than laugh at:eek:. i was looking for something around the 100k mark with a couple of climbs as i dont have the fitness do go over that at the moment.ive done a map my ride route

heres the link..

Nice. I know the first 55 km well.

On any day except Sunday you'll be with lots of cars and trucks on R299 from 32 km to 41.5 km. But that's OK cause it's downhill.

From 67 km to 107 km you will probably find quite dull. Just suburban highway.

If instead of going straight at 55.2 km you turn right, you can go up to Shiraishi-toge. Then down r172. A wonderful descent (but watch out for cars coming the other way!)

The return from Ogawa to Hanno is indeed not particularly interesting, and can be quite a busy road. Wouldn't recommend it. Much nicer to return via the Green Line, i.e. don't descend from Sadamine Toge and instead go to Shiraishi Toge and do not descend there either but keep going on the ride road, basically all the way until Hanno. This involves some up and down, but is doable and definitely much nicer than the route you have chosen.

thanks for the advice guys, i think ill definently take r172 instead, i had a feeling that there would be some uninspiring parts on that route, so far ive found ive got a pretty good knack for finding traffic laden suburban highways. I'll definently be taking it easy on the decent though as im still adjusting to having my front brake on the left hand side as opposed to the right.

hi paul, i lived in a town called mandurah whicch is mainly flat lands where id either drive to the climb or do the full trek.

the first hill is in a place called serpentine, the road is pretty much always empty and is home to my cycling clubs hill climb time trial, its about 15 km but only about 3 km is of any difficult, theres a car park at the top so you can ride dow and then back up.

the second is at a dam a little bit south, i used to do this one the most as it is the closest to my house.

and the last was my favourite which is again a little further south and if you look on the second map there is a road called del park road that joins this climb as part of the clubs peel classic cycle race. i just used to do the out and back but its a nice climb and once upon a time ago it was the site of the annual race the train hill climb as part of the pinjarra festival, a handicap race where you would race the train and some old codgers on penny farthings.

as you can see theyre all pretty similar, there are also a few in the perth hills but i never used to venture out there except for races, but there all about the same, average between 3.5-5% over 3-8 km most of them have a few kicks between 5-8% but never usually for more than 200-500m. but having said all that since the roads are well surfaced, wide and pretty straight if you like going fast you can hit between 65-75km/h on these hills and there are a couple in perth that you can get up to about 80 on your own or a 85 or so if you slipstream the semi trailers on the dual carrigeways to kalgoorlie and brookton.

Interesting, thanks for posting them up.

You're going to have a field day here mate.
