Hi all, I pass through Japan at least once a year spending time mainly in Ashikaga (where my wife is from) and also normally a few nights in Tokyo too, the next time should be towards the end of July or August for a month or so. This time around I will finally be bringing over a bike or two, possibly the two below (I'm based in Paris so all my stuff is french) but we'll see how things evolve.

Was wondering if there's anyone living and riding around the area - Ashikaga or near-by in Tochigi prefecture. I fancy exploring a bit and the roads are nice, and plenty of hills. I'll also be trying to spend a little time riding around Tokyo too, visiting all the stores I've not gotten around to yet and possibly doing an evening ride if there are some going on.

Any advice for riding in August in particular? I'm sure it's gonna be far too hot for me. Also, it's not too far from Ashikaga to Tokyo by bike, but how are the roads - congested?

Bonjour!

Nice bikes.

August is hot, yeah. You can still ride it though, just realise that it is going to be seriously ridiculously warm...

In the end I was in and around Ashikaga for 6 weeks from the end of July through to September, yes, very very hot. Still the countryside is lovely there, a couple of photos -

I'll be back in May and plan on bringing other a 10 speed groupset with much wider ranging gears than I have now, and plan to explore more of north Tochigi and Gunma, with a plan to do some cycling over towards Nikko to the north and Mount Akagi to the east.

I also ended up bringing this too:

And buying this
