I was looking around for bike-event postings in and around the Tokyo area and found this site; it looks like a good community resource.
I'm a graduate student visiting from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
My interest in bicycles is mostly from the commuting angle, having grown up in rural Minnesota where I was the first one on and the last one off the school bus (70-minute ride). I saved up, bought a bike and took it from there, not being particularly jazzed about buying a car, paying for gas and insurance, and not getting any exercise from it either.
In the spring and summer of 2003 I visited blacksmiths (鍛冶屋さん) in Japan, biking from around Nagano to Tokyo, then from Tokyo to Niigata, up the Japan Sea coast to Hokkaido and eventually to the Shiretoko Penninsula in the north-east of Hokkaido (no blacksmiths up there that I know of; that was mostly for sightseeing) and back to southern Hokkaido where I took a ferry back to near Tokyo. Other than that I've done shorter trips in Wisconsin and look forward to the next chunk of time when I can do another longer trip--maybe Australia, maybe southern Japan, maybe the U.S. if the dollar is much weaker.
Until then I'm getting familiar with urban commuting in the Machida-Nagatsuta-Aobadai area (Yokohama-shi, Kanagawa-ken), heading sometimes into Tokyo and also every Sunday to Futako-Tamagawa for Ultimate frisbee.
Perhaps I will meet some of you on the 16-17th July tour.
