I just purchased a Go Pro HD 1080p helmet camera. Has anybody used one or has one? Is it "hot" or "not"?

A little late for product research is it not? CPD ? (Compulsive Purchase Disorder) I'm also in the market for a camera but I found this one a little to big to use when racing.

I was looking at this one: http://contour.com/camera/contour_hd

The GoPro is a bit heavy and big as a helmet camera. I'm a geek, BUT I feel I take geekiness to a whole new level when I put the GoPro on my helmet. Totally uncool.

I got the chest strap for it, but when you use the drops all you get video of is your stem and front wheel. I had to modify the strap a bit.

Resolution is optimized for streaming:

but you'll see what I mean about using the drops and the chest strap.

It's very good.

Have a look at this video taken by our guide in the Alps this summer. Chest strap is great - he mounted the camera upside down to get the right angle. Also tried the helmet mount - I had to rotate that in the editing.

Definitely hot, in my opinion. GoPro Hero HD

Here's my Norikura downhill

Here's my daily commute

They just released a firmware update. If you don't have it on the unit you just bought, get it and install it. It enables upside-down mode.

I didn't have the problems rommelgc mentions with the chest strap.

There are video filters (for editing suites like Final Cut Pro, etc.) to reduce the Jellyvision™ effect that japanviking experiences.

I don't use mine much, day to day. So if anyone would like to rent, beg, or borrow, I'm open to offers.

Nasty course! How did you get all the info on the camera?

It's totally "hot" for me, but like Half-Fast Mike I don't use it often. It's in the jersey pocket most of the time.

I didn't have the problems rommelgc mentions with the chest strap.

Maybe it has something to do with my torso, I'm not very tall you see. I've seen other people on the Net have the same problems. They're solution was to mount the camera upside down, or mount it properly but put a wedge underneath the chest strap plate.

From the Kusatsu thread...
Sorry about that, Mike, I assume you know a good chiropractor around here. I"ll experiment with the helmet mount next time.
Did you have the camera mounted the right way up? You can get a better angle if you mount it upside-down and then use the camera's upside down function to flip the video capture around. (Might require a firmware update, depending on when/where you bought it.)

Excellent suggestion! I have already upgraded to the latest firmware and will test the upside-down position later today. :thumb:
