Help From Rockies to Rock Gardens: A Newcomer’s Quest for Mountain Trails

@GrantT , it's rare that I'm mistaken for somebody who knows what they're talking about. Most flattering; thank you!

I don't have a mountain bike, but I know that they have wide handlebars. Rinkōbukuro made for them do exist, but offhand I don't know which. Not having a mountain bike, and being an enfeebled old fart, I don't know where the trails are and can't lead anyone to them, let alone along them. (I do know that people have got off the train with mountain bikes at stations where I've got off with a road bike.) How one enshrouds a bike depends on the pattern of bike and the pattern of shroud, and the particular shroud usually comes with a (more or less cryptic) explanation. Best is to try it out at home, with nobody watching.

I did contribute a lot of words (maybe too many) to the celebrated rinkōbukuro thread; happy to answer follow-up questions to the best of my ability.

As for rope-showing, I'm thinking of going to Kazahari tomorrow (Friday). Asphalt, and grandpa speed; but if anyone's interested, pipe up (and quickly). (Too late for making arrangements: I'm about to turn off the computer.)

Hey, @Tsuga
I just remembered a group of youtube videos I watched a while back. This guy from the US went round Japan riding MTB parks and local trails. Might give some insight into the MTB scene out here. link

Cool, thanks. I'll have to check them out. MTB in Japan makes me think about the old-timers in the US talking about the 80s and 90s, just before MTB blew up. It even tracks with the BMX / Pump Track aspect.

I know inflation is driving up the cost of everything, but what's the mountain market like? How much is a mountain going for these days? And do you need to talk to the Kami first?

@Tsuga I've heard that a few MTB parks have been opening up in recent years. Any kind of boost in cycling would be great to see.

As for mountains, is this part of a future plan to open MTB Tsuga? Even if not, a mountain might be worth buying for the bush tucker available given prices at the supermarket these days. And if you are going to buy a mountain, I think talking it over with your Kami-san first is essential.

(Kami-san being a coloquial term for wife :)

And a link
