Hey,
I would like to compile a list of everybody's favorite rides/climbs with a focus on Summer riding, e.g. next to streams, high altitude, in shady valleys, etc...

I'll be doing a couple of two day trips in August and September, because my company weekends are shifted to Monday/Tuesdays for energy reasons. I plan to rinko&ride most over Honshu and maybe pack a Hokaido three day trip in.

To get this thread started and set the format:

1. Yabitsu North approach - It's shady and most of the way a stream next to you cools things down.

2. Sado Island - quiet roads, beautiful scenery, beach camping, chance to combine it with the fantastic earth celebration in August or the sado hill climb event in September

3. Izu Hanto - great coastline on the far side, nice network of passes and skyline roads over the backbone, easy access from Tokyo

4. Noto Hanto - nice coast road all the way round, quiet except for when the Tour de Noto hits town in September (easy to tag along if you want)

5. Kashiwazaki, Niigata - beautiful coastline, lots of small challenging climbs inland, few cars, great onsens and ice cold beer at chez Andy!

From chino up over the Venus line to utsukushigahara. Down to Matsumoto.

Tons of climbing. Beautiful. Cool. As a bonus you can do it as a day trip on a seishun juhachi kippu.

The Crystal Line in Yamanashi - from Enzan through to Kiyosato, followed by 35km downhill. I haven't yet completed it, but fortunately there are several escape routes! http://classic.mapmyride.com/ride/japan/yamanashi/898124995694161575

The Shimanami Kaido - a hop-scotch of bridges and islands (almost) linking Shikoku with Honshu.

Closer to home - following the Tamagawa-josui is a nice, shady way to get out west as far as Haijima. Much more tree cover than along the Tamagawa itself.

Many of the little roads in the mountains of Chiba are nice and shady. e.g., the Half Fast Heights of Chiba loop.

And here's a map for Chino to Bessho onsen - the one Kori suggested above. http://classic.mapmyride.com/ride/japan/-nagano/565128634672785566

You guys are awesome! I'm going to do a couple of these for sure and post my impressions...

Gunma, baby! (and some Tochigi)

I just spent 3 days going Numata to Ashikaga through Konsei Pass. Fabulous ride
Day 1 - Numata 300m (Iwamoto-eki) to Oze (Ooshimizu 1200m plus a hike into Oze-numa 1765m)
Day 2 Oze to Nikkou (Konsei-touge 1850m)
Day 3 Nikkou to Ashikaga (Hosoo-touge 1200m - shady climb)
