First I want to thank everyone here for all the good advice that you've all have shared with me. And now the big news is, June 6th my Giant R3 Cross bike will be at the store for me to say "yes, now you are going to be that "adventurous cyclist".
OK, but I need to know about insurance. I understand that the bike shop may sell it. So what should I be buying and what are the cost of such insurance. Also, does the NHI actually cover injuries on a bicycle accident?

Thanks everyone.

I have insurance through BISPA (explanation and agent courtesy of GS Astuto)

500 yen a month, paid by credit card and renewable annually. In addition to the liability insurance, the provision for pick-up by their road service is great for me as I regularly cycle too far from a station to realistically take a walk of shame after a breakdown.

I am using Softbank's bicycle insurance, which costs me 540 ¥ per month. I think my wife is covered as well.
