Detailed Bike Build Thread

In further defense of Chuck's work; he fit me to a 100mm stem last year, and told me I was actually sitting around 103mm for optimum fit. I decided to stay with 100mm. I then proceeded to go absolutely mental for the whole of 2013 and turn myself into a hyper-cyborg from hell mainly by trying to keep up with @Mlac Peek. It worked. I had my bike refitted a few weeks back by Chuck, who told me that I would now be OK with either 100mm, or could comfortably go up to 110mm if I wanted. He also dropped my stem by 3mm. I went out immediately and bought a 110mm Deda Superleggero stem, which is sitting on my desk and will be fit after I get through the very early season base training, to ensure I am fully warmed up to deal with the extra length, as well as dealing with the drop in stem height.

For the record Illy, I don't think you are far off base with your fit calculator, but there is more to it. That's all. If you want me to show you what I'm talking about, please schedule a fit. I just felt it necessary to defend myself as you have spoken negatively of my work. You do sound like you have a grasp on the mechanics of positioning, but it is all based upon an individual with ideal flexibility. This is the problem. These calculators are based upon people who most likely ride their bikes for their job. Working in the peloton I have found that most of these people are extraordinary. Meaning that they have been born with capabilities beyond what is normal. When the average Joe gets a hold of Cancelllara's fit data and thinks its a great idea to position himself the same because he is the same proportion it seems ludicrous, right? To me, it does. But from your argument, if you are proportionally identical you should have the same size frame and stem, Yeah? So lets take another example out of the bag. One with photographic evidence that you could conjure up if you should choose to. Sean Kelly or Chris Boardman. They both ride bikes still. They are not far off the height they were when they were competitive. They still ride like bandits too. Kelly is heard to train with the team he directs and he breaks legs. Do you think they ride the same size bike they did when they were winning classics or breaking world records?

I have decided this thinking of fit calculators its great for people who have nothing to go by and no money for a fit, but lets be serious here. You cant fit someone based on limb and torso length.

Any one of the 30 or so members of this forum that have utilized my services will probably agree.

Cause I wanted a 'Fat Chance' back in the day but could not afford one.

As for your fitting technique..... it was discussed today at the Team3 meeting at Atsugi Base.
My response to a question....

During my fit - the reason for the changes was just as important as the changes to me.
To understand the 'why' was crucial to me openly to accept the change to how i have been set up for years.

Chuck and I actually disagreed on my fit.
I was not a fan of the feel at all.
Chuck offered me the opportunity to do it his way for a significant amount of time.
If after that time I disagreed, we would discuss options.

Based on this assurance, I agreed.
After roughly 50km, I adjusted to his fit, and no changes have been needed..
 
As a professional coach that organises training camps Pro Race Mechanic is my first choice of fitter and mechanic period...... he's also the first choice of mechanic and fitter for Pro riders that come to Japan for the CX racing and also the Japan Pro Tour.

Simply put he knows his shit.

The shop I worked in back in '85 had a Fat Chance for sale, and the shop owner let me ride it when he and I would go out riding together. Sweet ride, until I had a branch rip the rear derailleur out of the hanger. :oops:

As a side - my Anchor weighs around 7kgs but people spend so much time on paying big money for very light bikes when themselves could loose a few kilos - much cheaper and better for you - so I am 182cm and weigh 70 kgs so me and bike 77kilos.......
 
...or you could get to optimum weight and fitness AND get a super expensive bike. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I am not saying go out and spend huge amounts - When I built mine there was a choice of Dura Ace or Ultegra - the difference in weight was about 200g but the price was 3 times - easy choice Ultegra. I see French guys on their Sunday run stop at the coffee shop and talk about their bikes and pick them up to feel the weight etc and all with huge stomachs bulging over their cycle shorts!!!!
 
I agree that seeing fatties running their sausage juice smothered fingers over their ultra-rigs is cringe. Just in the same way seeing Pinarello Dogmas here in Japan with stands on them, slammed saddles, and flat pedals being bow-legged waddle-pedaled™ by metabo toadmen is cringe.

I oppose the idea that buying an extremely expensive bike is a bad thing though. I spend large amounts of money on my bike for a number of reasons...

-Because I can.
-Because I want to know what the absolute best feels like, and cycling is unique in the 'wheeled sports' world, in that the average guy can buy and ride pretty much the exact same (and often better!) bike that the pros use in the top races in the world. This accessibility is simply not present in F1, WRC, etc.
-Because when I ride it, it feels incredible, like a carbon arrow.
-Because I know that what I have before me is the current pinnacle of human engineering in this area, and accounts for trillions and trillions and trillions of man hours of work and screams perfection.
-Because by buying the most expensive parts, I am helping to fund future developments of even better, sicker stuff, and that the hyper-end gear will then filter down to the cheaper ranges, making things better for everyone.
-Because the really expensive stuff that has been designed properly and is not merely priced to meet fashion demands is made to such tight tolerances, it almost makes me cry with how beautiful it is.

Not that I ever feel I need to justify to anyone how I spend my own money, but at 184cm and hitting 63kg a week ago, I'm desperately working on gaining weight (in a healthy manner if I can). The last ride I did I really felt I hade no power at all... stepping on the scale afterwards made me realize why. (most of my pb's where at 67-68kg)

To be honest I kind of envy people who don't have the urge to get the top-of-the-line stuff. I have learnt how my mind works by now, I buy a middle of the range (anything) because logically speaking it's good enough for 99% of us, and certainly me, but than my mind starts wandering... I wonder what that top-of-the-line (anything) would be like, and the more I think about it the more I want it. If financial situation dictates that's is beyond my reach I can quickly forget about it. But if I can see that with a few months of economic restructuring (basic saving, selling some stuff, not eating out/drinking etc) I could attain this piece of "art", I probably go for it. So now I try to skip that "middle-of-the-range" thing and save me some time and money (as weird as it sounds). It's purely for my own satisfaction and not to impress anyone else. But for me it's definitely more fun to ride with ace equipment, and that in turn get's me riding more, which then gives me more opportunity to wash my bike which is the main reason for all of this!

That was an unnecessary trip into my psyche hehe, Now back to posting those bikes fellas! (with pics)
