Hi All!

Have you ever tried to fix various cassette sprocket to road bike between SHIMANO component families? For instance, 32T or 34T for mountain bike to road bike.
As SHIMANO has no 32T or 34T for road bike and I was curious to experiment this cross category exchanges. And I tried and found that there is no problem at all except a little bit of weight increase of almost 100g (in case of from 11-21T to 11-32T). So, why don't you try this?
Any opinions or comments will be welcome.:)

Shimano cassettes

If you have a 9-speed (or less) set up you can use a larger, mountain bike cassette on a road bike. There are currently no Shimano 10-speed mountainbike cassettes (though they probably will appear sooner or later).
You may have to change the rear derailleur as well to cope with the larger difference in sprocket sizes, as most road bike versions are only rated to 27 Teeth maximum sprocket size. According to this article http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_ca-g.html#capacity road rear derailleurs can take up tp 30 teeth but I've not tried this myself.
Wide ratio 10-speed cassettes are available from IRD. http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/k7.html#10
Obviously the jumps between gears are larger so you won't be able to keep pedalling at the optimum speed as easily as with a typical road cassette.

Hi AlanW, thank you for the post.

As the mater of facts, luckily enough, you'll be able to replace 9-speed cassettes to those of 10-speed between SHIMANO's. In my case, any arrangements for not only rear dérailleur but front is not required so far.:)
