Coming to Tokyo

Hello all. I am moving to Tokyo next week and have a couple of questions.

1) Is bike theft a problem in Tokyo? I have a relatively expensive road bike which I want to bring to Japan, but can I lock it up on the street? Normally I would not do this on the streets of my native Toronto for too long a time.

2)Can I get in any good 40k-50k rides in the city itself, or do I have to get out of the city? Is traffic a big problem?

Basically I am trying to decide if I should bring my expensive road bike or my cheap hybrid. If I don't have to worry about theft too much, and I can get some decent rides in without having to get too far out of the city, then I would prefer the road bike.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Warren,

welcome to the TCC Forum! :welcome:

Just my two yen worth: there is bicycle theft, as in any major city, but to a far smaller extent than elsewhere. A lot of cheap shopping bikes parked around stations tend to be "borrowed" for a ride home. I use my road bike on a daily basis to commute in Tokyo. You can definitely bring yours for urban rides. Just buy a good set of chains. However, I wouldn't leave my Trek outside overnight, she parks next to my bed. :)

And yes, there are a lot of interesting routes in Tokyo.

Hi Warren-san,

welcome to TCC!:welcome:

You need strong lock for you road bike, I think.
To say about me, my first bike was stolen about 5 years ago.

I had a call from police after 6 months later "Your bike is found!".
But it is full of scratches and rust. It takes me many times and money to revive the bike.:(

Please take care.
