Im just getting into cycling and I am looking for a good starter bike. I would prefer used as they are cheaper then buying new but i dont know what size frame I need or what type of bike I am looking for exactly. I will be riding on roads but I want thicker tires then what comes on most road bikes so i was thinking about going with a crosssyle of sorts. I was hoping to find a bike shop in Yokohama that was big enough to where I could really scope out my options. If they have used bikes its even better! Can I get some help? Can anyone lead me in the right direction????
Thanks!

Hi ETPatt!

The best shop i have found so far is Y's Road, next to the tracks after Sakuragitcho station towards Yokohama:

It is a fairly big bike shop in three stores with everything from road bikes to MTB. Unfortunately they don't have any second hand bikes.
Buying a factory built bike from a shop is always the easiest way, but not always the most cost efficient way. If you are on a tight budget and have a lot of time and patience I would suggest a second hand.
Check the "Classifieds" here on TCC, that's where i found my latest bike, and I l love it !! (Thanks David) In addition to that I know I have seen links to a number of second hand shops in Tokyo in one of the forums here in TCC.
One other thing they don't have in Ys road is large bikes (I have tried but I had to give it up), so if you are a bit above average height it can be tricky to find a bike there.
Anyhow, the guys working there are very helpful and most of them speak good English (if language is a problem for you) so it is always worth a visit.

Cheers,
Christian

I will go up to Yokohama this weekend and check it out! I think though I will end up getting a second hand bike... I will check out some of the shops in Tokyo. Im patient but I would like a bike within a month or so.... therefore I guess im not THAT patient! Above Average height.... well im just about 6 foot which in the states isnt so much above but here..... might be a different story! I will check it out though! Thanks for the input!

Kind of a Necro post sorry..... but also Stage 1 out near Hoshikawa on route 16 is an amazing shop. The owner is rather tall for a Japanese guy and is able to get large sizes.... also he is able to get you what you need very quickly Y's told me it would take 6 months to get my 56cm Pinarello, at Stage 1 had it for me in 2 weeks.

Also he is able to do you some deals as well and although he was unable to drop the price of the bike he did allow me to go on a 30,000 yen spree on any extras I needed, that he wrote off.

Hey Thanks!

A bit belated or not, good info! Its always nice to know where another bike shop is in the area. I actually got a really sweet deal on a FELT from the states. It was used but used like literally ridden around the block used. And I MEAN around the block! I had to have my dad ship it over but it was still half the cost of what I was looking at here for a 58. Totally worth it!
Thanks again for the tip!

Thank you to Far East for posting. I have been looking for an alternative to the lousy human interaction at Y's road. They are willing to negotiate on some bikes although they said they are firm on others. I want to pass my money to an establishment other than Y's in return for a bike. I went to Stage 1 yesterday and they gave me very reasonably helpful service.

The manager (Guy with the Goatee) is an odd ball...but bloody great and although doesn't speak a word of English tries very hard to be accommodating. They do both MTB and Road rides from the shop on a Sunday Morning and also sponsor a team that will give you good advise.

Also another shop to look at is Sagami Cycles:

Sagami Cycles:

106 3三ツ境, 瀬谷区Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
Link: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=35.467...9&z=19&iwloc=A

I this is a little further up Route 16 and they gave me a very good deal on my TIME RXS pedals (4,000 Yen cheaper than Y's) and Dura Ace shifters (10,000 Yen cheaper than Y's) they also have a point system and a wealth of information, the shop is also very family orientated and entertained my daughter while I went and looked at the top shelf bike porn!

Also one other thing about Y's..... went to the shop in Okachimachi (Just outside of Akihabara) and they have a Road specailist store.... have to say its the best ever service I have ever received from Y's the guys want to help, they will answer any questions you have and know thier stuff.

They are more interested in the rider as well, as one of the clerks offered me a better product that was cheaper than the one I intended to buy and even explained why.
