Cyclist nabbed for stealing food from supermarket during 700 km journey
GOBO, Wakayama --

A middle-aged man who stole food from a supermarket here while cycling from Fukuoka Prefecture to southern Wakayama Prefecture, some 700 kilometers away, has been arrested, police said.

Takashi Hotta, 42, an unemployed man of no fixed address, admitted to the allegations during questioning. "I was hungry, so I stole the food," he was quoted as telling investigators.

Hotta, who was on his way to Shirahama, southern Wakayama Prefecture, from Kitakyushu, had only 400 yen when he was arrested.

The 42-year-old had borrowed several hundred yen from numerous local governments during his trip under the law supporting travelers in trouble.

Hotta stole a rice ball, a piece of bread and a piece of candy, worth a total of 305 yen, from a supermarket in Gobo on Wednesday, investigators said. A security guard overpowered him and handed him over to police officers. (Mainichi)

I wonder if the guard slept well that night....
