Hi,

I've been in Japan for over 4 years now, most of it in Nagano, and moved to Tokyo this year and married my wonderful wife. I've been riding since I was seven, and this year has been the longest I've ever been without a bicycle.... Im gagging for a ride.

I left most of my rides in Nagano with friends, as they weren't really suited for Tokyo and I still am awaiting a parking spot for a bike in my apartment.

I'm sick of waiting and getting fatter so at the end of this month, I think I`ll just throw down some money on a new Specialized sequoia and ride it into the ground... I hope y`all will put up with my silly questions about cycling in Tokyo.

Hi Scott,

Welcome to Tokyo and TCC. Where do you live? A few good rides during the weekends and weekdays. Ask away...

Thanks for the reply, I live in shirogane. I'm mostly scared about parking my bike, in AUS I never locked my house, in Nagano too.... I read so many stories about stolen bikes... My main question at the moment is how often are nice bikes stolen in Tokyo...

I am sure if you do a search on google you can find stats on stolen bikes. Personally, i have never had my bike stolen. But then again all of my nice bikes sit on my veranda. Bottom line don't ever leave a nice bike unattended without a lock. But also if you do use multiple locks. Also, this brings up the question are you using your "nice" bike for road riding or riding around town? Those are technically two different bikes.

On Thursday I say the "removal crew" taking away illegally parked bikes in Shibuya. Some planks had parked their fixies right outside Tsutaya.... One had a cheapo wire lock that took two seconds to cut off. The other had a really impressive and expensive Abus lock which took TWO seconds to cut off!
If your bike is too valuable to lose, keep it indoors.

I've had a bike stolen from outside my house, it was a nice commuter cross bike and it was locked but went anyway.

There is a cleansing starting yesterday and running to the end of the month. Bikes outside sations will be removed. A poster on the train said so.

If you want to keep it safe, keep it with you. If it's nice it'll be taken.

Ahhh, shite.... I come from a no lock place (for the last 15 years) into a big international city..... so, I need to change my habits. I have a few bikes, but they lack the registration sticker (bought in australia and transferred here) and I've been pinged once in tokyo - do not want to repeat.... so, I really want to get a swiss army knife style bike.... Needs to do work transport ( almost 100 k round trip) shopping (racks et al) and weekends away...... suggestions welcome.

and yes, I know such a bike doesn't exist. It's all compromise from here on end... as I can really only house 1 bike..... and I'd like to get my wife the same or similar style bike... So we can enjoy the clogged up sh*t fight that is Tokyo..

Thanks for all your replies... makes a fat pig feel welcome..

Sounds like a job for a Surly.

May I suggest a Mason. If I was restricted to one bike for multiple things I would go with one of these.

Plus the exchange rate at the moment makes them more affordable (they do ship to Japan)

Thanks for that, a brand Ive never heard of..... at the moment I've scared myself out of buying a high end bike due to theft. I can't store it inside (apartment is really small - only outside parking) ... so maybe back to mama chari for me..... (insert sad face icon)

Mason. . . Hang on, based 5 miles from me yet I have never seen one of their frames. Also, not much fun being on the other end of that exchange rate :(

i'm so enjoying this

If I could afford a cheribum, I could probably afford a personal bike parking space... those stainless steel frames are just lush.... maybe there should be a "less known manufacturer" thread on here for bike porn

sorry, still not sure how to upload an image....

I settled for a specialized sequoia, that the wife has allowed me to keep indoors!!! So stoked to have ridden just over 240km this week after almost a year off riding.
