Hello,
This is Naoko.
Yesterday, I went in the "Miyako-jima" Triathlon.
The swim was 3km.
The bike ride was 155km.
The run was 42.195km - A full marathon!

We heard some thunder early in the morning and thought, "what should we do?", but by the time we started the run, we had clear skies!
I met Philip just before the start, and it was great to have another companion during the race.

Philip's times;
Swim: 59:23
Bike: 5:00:03
Run: 3:29:35
Total: 9:29:01 - 66th, overall!

Naoko's times;
Swim: 58:02
Bike: 6:51:46
Run: 5:48:14
Total: 13:38:02 - 1,125th, overall

The time limit on the race was 14 hours, but ! made it in there (no sweat)!
Thank you, Philip!

Hip-hip-hooray to Naoko-san and Philip!

Got any party pics? :)

well done

good going the two of you! I would be drowned after the first 50 meters swimming and the run is just too painful just thinking about it, guess this make you iron men and women.

Way to go Philip!

66th out of over 1,000!
Awesome!
I really think those rides you did with Christoph and Thomas had a lot to do with your result! I don't think I could keep up with you anymore - I think Sora & Thomas made a good choice in picking you as the "TCC-Triathlon-group leader".

I also did my best to translate Naoko's report - It might not be 100% accurate, though - Sorry!
By the way, I noticed that Naoko kicked your arse in the "swimming" category...
What's goin' on with that, mate?;)
Catch you later! T

Concratulations

Great work Naoko-san and Philip.:D

What an achievement to finish an Iron Man/woman Competition. All your hard training paid off in the end. I'll look forward to looking at the photos on the forum.

Miyakojima Triathlon

Thank you everyone for your kind words!

This was my first long-distance triathlon and second triathlon - so I was fairly happy with the result (except the swim which was a disaster). I have to thank Christoph (Cinelli), Paul (Fluro2au), Thomas and Travis (Yellow Giant). I could never have improved my bike without you or this website.

I met Naoko-san on the beach. What a wonderful lady and an amazing athlete! BIG THANK YOU Naoko-san for looking after me.

I have posted some pictures in the members gallery (Philip) and will write up a fuller report tomorrow.

Cheers,

Philip

good pictures mate
You look absolutely knackered at the finish but again well done!
I was surprised to see no tribars on your bike, any reason?
cheers simon.

Cheers Kiwisimon . . .

It has been a deliberate decision not to use tri-bars. My understanding is that to use a tri front end you ideally want to use a steep seat tube geometry frame (approx. 78 degrees). This puts the bottom bracket and feet further back - maintaining the torso-femur angle.

Because I only started cycling recently I decided my first priority was to buy a road bike and develop my cycling capability first - which I believe is where 99 percent of the performance equation lies anyway. For example, Christoph would out-ride most cyclists regardless of which bike you put him on. It is not just his power, he has great technique.

Equally, I understand you should take advantage of any opportunities to improve performance. But you need to train a lot to ride in the TT position for 5 hours. Most cyclists I past had fancy bikes with TT bars - but they were only using them 30 percent of the time.

Next year (with some more mileage under me) I will buy a nice TT bike :D

What do you think? I would welcome your opinion - I know you are an experienced rider.

Cheers,

Philip

Riding position.

I'm definitely no expert!, But just one thing that might help next time:
I'm only going from the photos you uploaded, so please don't take any offense - your elbows are out way too far! If you bring them (elbows) "in" closer to your knees as you're riding, your wind-resistance will drop considerably - Taking the weight of the bike and hills out of the equation, most of a cyclist's resistance is against the wind.
I still have to consciously think about that stuff on river rides, but as soon as I pull my elbows in, the speed goes up by nearly 1-2km/h, without any extra effort in the legs.
Also, riding in the drop position does that for you automatically - you can't bend your arms out. Just do a few river rides on the drops for the whole time to get used to the position.
...I hope this helps! Travis

No offense taken . . .

Hi Travis,

Thanks for your honest observations. You make some good points. I need to improve my technique. Maybe an early move to a TT position would be the most efficient path. Uhmm. Food for thought.

Cheers,

Philip

PS - only if your interested, this is an excellent article on the issue of triathlon bike setup:

http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/techctr/bikefit.html

A good way to learn proper posture is to ride no hands but in a crouched position. Keep your hands about a cm off the handle bars as if you were actually about to grab them. You can quickly grab them if you have to. This helps improve your balance and strengthens up the stomach and back muscles. Once you can rely on those muscles rather than your arms you will find improvements all round.
If you get a stiff neck or numb fingers it means your posture is not good.
Takes a long time to get your back muscles and balance right...

To practise keeping your elbows in try rubbing your knees against the top tube and touching your elbows with your knees as well. You'll be riding very aerodynamically if you can do that...Imagine your back to be parrallel with the road if you can too... bend those elboews....

;)

I'd like to be able to do a triathlon one day but my knees are just too weak... great work to both of you...

cheaper than a new bike

"Because I only started cycling recently I decided my first priority was to buy a road bike and develop my cycling capability first - which I believe is where 99 percent of the performance equation lies anyway. For example, Christoph would out-ride most cyclists regardless of which bike you put him on. It is not just his power, he has great technique.

Perfectly thought out logic. Just don't worry about the other people.
Re angles and what not
look at something like this .
http://www.profile-design.com/2006_product_pages/seat_post/fast_forward.html
and throw on some clip on bars
http://www.profile-design.com/2006_product_pages/aerobars/airstryke.html

but then again a nice new bike????

better to practice on the cheaper up grade I think.

Did the transition from swim to bike and than to run take much adjusting? I imagine it would take a while to get into sync.
oh and if you are looking for bike stuff look at second hand auctions and classifieds. Lot of people sink a lot of money into gear and then find out they haven't time or inclination to keep up with it.

Cheers Kiwisimon . . .

Your suggested upgrades look like an effective and easy solution - the best of both worlds!

Regarding transitions. During the swim my arms are doing most of the work and my legs are in standby mode. 100 meters before exiting the water I kick hard to wake the legs up. If I don't do it - I run up the beach with a wobble :D

Bike to run is more challenging. I believe it has something to do with moving from a non-weight-bearing exercise to a weight-bearing exercise. A similar experience to getting out of bed after being sick for a few days when I was a child. You have to run out hard - mentally I find this challenging. Gradually over the next 5 km my speed picks up and the effort required subsides. If I don't shake it off, I will be stuck in 2nd gear for the rest of the run and it does not feel any easier, plus you will be running for longer.

Thanks again for your bike setup insight - simple solutions are always the best!

Enjoy the Tour de Tohoku!

Philip

☆before start

レースNo.

☆swim
